Lemon Cherry Gelato and disputed authorship
Lemon Cherry Gelato is the strain most closely linked to Backpackboyz. In a High Times interview, Quesada said it came from a bag seed in a Gelato #33 Connected pack found in 2016 and was scaled by 2018; High Times included the Backpackboyz entry among its best strains of 2022.
Other industry accounts dispute whether Quesada or Cannatique actually selected and named the original plant. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Backpackboyz was central to commercializing and popularizing Lemon Cherry Gelato, while genetic and cultivation authorship remains contested. A correct profile should not turn disputed provenance into settled fact.
Products and authenticity
The brand’s catalog has included premium flower, pre-rolls and integrated vapes around Lemon Cherry Gelato, White Cherry Gelato, Black Cherry Gelato, Bubblegum Gelato and related candy-forward strains, plus streetwear and accessories. Products and cultivators vary by licensed market.
Counterfeit packaging is a persistent problem for high-demand cannabis names. Holograms and QR codes can assist with brand verification but do not replace a state license, package UID, batch information and purchase from a licensed retailer. Backpackboyz has operated branded stores and licensed partnerships in multiple states. California’s Department of Cannabis Control currently lists Backpack Boyz San Bernardino, operated by Rznhead Inc. under retailer license C10-0001460-LIC, as active. New Jersey commission records also show Backpack Boyz retail applicants, while historical interviews describe stores in California and Michigan.
Because brand sites, stores and cultivation partners are not necessarily one legal entity, each location should be verified in its state regulator’s database. The profile should link to a live locator rather than assert a permanent national store count.
2024 pesticide recall
On July 17, 2024, California issued a mandatory recall for one Backpackboyz Black Cherry Gelato Premium Vape integrated-vaporizer batch manufactured by K.U.S.H. Collective after detecting chlorfenapyr, a prohibited pesticide. The Department’s later enforcement notice identifies batch 091323BC / METRC batch 1A40603000172B5000000607.
The Los Angeles Times separately reported broader independent pesticide findings in Backpack Boyz vapes and said Quesada challenged earlier products as fake even though reporters bought one at a branded Long Beach store. The state recall is product- and batch-specific, not proof that every Backpackboyz product is contaminated; it is nevertheless material safety history and belongs prominently on the page.
