Cultivate is a historically important Massachusetts cannabis operator whose retail brand is no longer active as an independent chain. Its Leicester dispensary opened for medical sales in 2017 and, on November 20, 2018, became one of the first two stores authorized to begin adult-use cannabis sales in Massachusetts. Cresco Labs acquired Cultivate in 2021 and later converted its stores to Sunnyside.
From Natural Healthcare to Cultivate
Municipal and state records identify the operating company as Cultivate Holdings LLC, formerly Natural Healthcare, Inc. A 2018 host-community agreement placed the business at 1764 Main Street in Leicester and covered adult-use cultivation, processing and retail. Contemporary reporting identifies Sam Barber as Cultivate’s president; the reviewed primary records do not establish him as the sole founder, so that claim is not made.
Massachusetts first-day history
The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission approved Cultivate’s Leicester cultivation, product-manufacturing and retail licenses in October 2018. Cultivate and New England Treatment Access in Northampton opened on November 20, 2018, ending the state’s long delay between voter legalization and commercial adult-use sales. Cultivate’s role is therefore best described as one of the Commonwealth’s first two recreational retailers, not unqualified “first” status.
What the original business operated
Before acquisition, Cultivate combined cultivation and manufacturing with medical and adult-use retail. By the September 2021 transaction, it operated dispensaries in Leicester, Framingham and Worcester and brought approximately 42,000 square feet of active flowering canopy to Cresco. Historical menus included flower, pre-rolls, concentrates, edibles, vapes and topicals from Cultivate and other licensed producers.
The Cresco acquisition
Cresco Labs closed its acquisition of 100 percent of Cultivate in September 2021. A later annual filing records total consideration of $99.3 million. The deal added three operating dispensaries plus two cultivation/manufacturing locations, and it required Cresco to surrender adult-use sales at its Fall River store, which shifted to medical-only status at closing.
Cultivate is now Sunnyside
The former Cultivate website redirects to a Cresco page stating that all Cultivate dispensaries are now Sunnyside. The Leicester, Framingham and Worcester locations were rebranded; current menus, account systems and store policies belong to Sunnyside. This page stays live to preserve a documented Massachusetts brand history, not to imply that an independent Cultivate retail chain still operates.
What remains in regulatory records
Massachusetts licensing records can still show legal entities such as Cultivate Leicester Inc. or Cultivate Cultivation LLC. A surviving license name does not mean the consumer-facing brand has been revived. Corporate entities, state licenses, a building sign and the current retail banner are separate facts and can change on different schedules.
Products and availability today
There is no current standalone Cultivate product catalog in the reviewed sources. Former Cultivate locations now sell a mixed Sunnyside menu that includes Cresco-owned and third-party brands. Products packaged by a Cultivate legal entity should be attributed to the named licensee and brand on that specific label, not assumed to represent a restored national Cultivate line.
Awards and notable achievements
No sufficiently specific award ledger was located for Cultivate. Its best-documented achievement is operational and civic: helping launch Massachusetts’ adult-use retail market on its first legal sales day. That milestone is supported by regulator approval and contemporaneous reporting and is more meaningful than adding unverified “award-winning” language.
