Founded by John, Matty and Mike
Omura says it was founded in 2018 by three friends in design and technology living in Los Angeles, publicly introduced as John, Matty and Mike.
The system launched in 2019 around a goal of reducing combustion while making whole-flower vaporization more consistent and convenient.
Mike Simpson’s design path
Simpson’s prior career included design work for LEGO, Nike and Adidas, years in Japan, and development of heat-not-burn concepts for the tobacco industry. After moving to California and studying cannabis, he saw an opportunity to adapt controlled heating to flower.
That history explains Omura’s emphasis on industrial design and ritual. It also deserves plain disclosure because parts of the technical lineage came from tobacco-product development.
How the heat-not-burn system works
An Omura device uses a convection oven and programmed heat curve to warm the Flowerstick below combustion. The paper stick functions as the chamber and mouthpiece, so flower does not directly contact the oven.
This is different from an oil vape: the input is ground plant material rather than a liquid cartridge. It is also different from smoking because the system is designed not to ignite the flower.
Flowersticks
Flowersticks are disposable paper sleeves designed for one session. Empty versions can be filled at home, while prefilled cannabis sticks are made through licensed cultivation and manufacturing partners in markets where permitted.
The U.S. product page says an empty stick can hold up to approximately 0.15 grams, while other regional versions publish different capacities. Buyers should follow the specification for their exact device and market rather than assuming one global size.
Series 1
Series 1 established the basic system: insert a prepared Flowerstick into a compact, rechargeable device for a timed convection session. The format removes a reusable herb chamber and separate mouthpiece from daily maintenance.
It remains the simpler, lower-priced entry to the platform. Current bundles may include empty sticks or filling accessories, but package contents should be checked at purchase.
Series X and X1E
Series X adds automatic stick detection, two heat curves and a display-style charging base. Official European specifications describe a roughly 30-second heat-up and a three-and-a-half-minute session.
In Europe, Omura introduced the X1E in March 2026 with revised internal components aimed at higher-use medical markets. Product naming and availability differ by region, so X1E should not be presented as a universal U.S. model.
No-clean design and its tradeoff
Because the Flowerstick contains the plant and acts as the mouthpiece, Omura says the device does not require the scraping and solvent cleaning common to reusable dry-herb chambers. Any loose material can still be removed according to the manual.
The tradeoff is dependence on single-use paper sticks. Omura describes them as compostable and biodegradable and avoids a metal coil or plastic pod, but each session still consumes a manufactured component.
Partners, markets and awards
Omura is a hardware platform rather than a licensed cannabis cultivator. Simpson has explained that THC offerings come through partner brands, while the company designs products in the United States and manufactures devices in China.
The Series X Special Edition appears in the Chicago Athenaeum’s 2020 Good Design awards record, with HP Design credited. Later company materials also cite a 2022 Good Design USA result for Series X; the exact year and edition should remain attached to each recognition.
How to evaluate Omura. Check model, region, Flowerstick capacity, included accessories, heat modes, warranty and authorized seller. The U.S. company publishes a one-year limited device warranty, and prefilled cannabis products must be verified through the local licensed producer.
Omura’s distinctive contribution is a closed whole-flower format: reusable convection hardware paired with a disposable paper chamber, designed to reduce cleaning and make each session mechanically repeatable.
