Why the hollow base matters
Cutting a cavity into the bottom increases the pipe's interior volume without making the outside any bigger. Smoke gets more distance to travel before it reaches your lips, which takes some heat out of it.
The same cavity gives your fingers somewhere to sit. On a pipe this short that is the difference between a comfortable grip and pinching a hot tube.
An 18mm bowl is a deliberate middle. It takes a real pack without becoming the oversized bowl that burns half your flower while you are not drawing on it.

Where it earns its place
This is a pocket and desk pipe. Thick borosilicate at 4.5 inches is the combination that survives being carried, and at $24 it is not a piece you have to be precious about.
Eight colorways at one price is unusual this far down the shelf. It makes the Grotto an easy gift, and it makes it easy to keep track of whose pipe is whose when a few of them end up on the same table.
It is also easy to clean, which is the quiet reason a cheap pipe either stays in rotation or ends up in a drawer. A simple bowl and a short straight path means a soak and a pipe cleaner is the whole job — no percolator slits to work at, nothing to disassemble.
The honest limit is that it is a dry pipe. There is no water and no filtration, so hits run hotter and harsher than anything with a chamber, and a bowl this size is better shared than chained alone. That is the trade for something that lives in a jacket pocket.
