Z is the plant that created the candy lane in modern cannabis. Sold for most of a decade as Zkittlez and marketed since 2023 as The Original Z, it came out of Mendocino County as a found selection rather than a designed cross, and nearly every dessert-named hybrid on a menu today is chasing what it did first.
Where It Comes From
Z was found, not built. It turned up in Mendocino County in the early 2010s through Terp Hogz, the operation run by Green R. Fieldz and Tony Mendocino, working alongside Brandon Parker of 3rd Gen Family Farms. The cross first surfaced around 2012 and reached dispensary shelves as Zkittlez by 2013.
What followed was one of the fastest reputation builds in California flower. Within a few years the name was on menus across the state, then across the country, and then on a wave of crosses that borrowed the letter Z as shorthand for the whole flavor category.
That shorthand is still in use, which is a fair measure of how much ground one Mendocino selection covered. Plenty of plants get popular. Very few end up naming a category that outlives their own branding.
The Cross
Terp Hogz is the house of record, with 3rd Gen Family Farms alongside it at the start. Grapefruit is the parent the breeders have always pointed to, traced to a Humboldt County male. Beyond that the pedigree stays a held card: Terp Hogz has never published a full family tree, and the plant's standing was never built on one.
Flower runs dense and chunky rather than spear-shaped, light green with purple streaking in cooler rooms, under a heavy, oily resin coat. Caryophyllene, linalool and humulene sit in the profile.
It was never bred for yield or for shelf looks, and cure matters more here than on most cultivars, because the delicate top end of the profile is the first thing to disappear in a badly handled jar. A tired Z is a completely different purchase from a fresh one.
What It Left Behind
The trophies are real: first place at the 2016 Emerald Cup, Best Indica at the 2015 Cannabis Cups in both San Francisco and Michigan, and a 2023 King of Z Hill title.
The name change is the other half of the record. Mars Wrigley took Terp Hogz to court over the Skittles-adjacent branding, arguing it borrowed a price premium from the candy name. The settlement let Terp Hogz keep the Z logo under the new name The Original Z, and retired both Zkittlez and the circle-Z mark for good.
Few cannabis brands have had to rename a flagship at the height of its run and hold the audience anyway. Z did, and the single letter turned out to be all the equity it needed.
The High Rise Take
Z earned the category it created. Start here if candy terpenes are the target, then follow the letter out into the wider Z-crossed catalog once you know where the original set the bar. Start low with anything concentrated, and never drive after use.
