Z is an indica-dominant hybrid and one of the defining candy cultivars of its era, preserved and represented by The Original Z. The single-letter name reflects both cultural shorthand and the complicated trademark history around the cultivar once widely called Zkittlez.
Z: flower identity and lineage
The Original Z carries the official custodian and brand identity, while licensed cultivation can vary from one market release to another. Its parentage has not been publicly identified; the official account rejects the often-repeated Grape Ape and Grapefruit story and traces the cultivar to a mislabeled clone found by Gas Station Bob.
Found in Mendocino, not engineered
Z turned up in Mendocino County in the early 2010s through Terp Hogz, the operation run by Green R. Fieldz and Tony Mendocino, working alongside Brandon Parker of 3rd Gen Family Farms. The cross first surfaced around 2012 and reached dispensary shelves as Zkittlez by 2013.
What followed was one of the fastest reputation builds California flower has produced. Within a few years the name was on menus across the state, then across the country, and then attached to a wave of crosses that borrowed the letter Z as shorthand for an entire flavor category.
That shorthand is still in use, which is a fair measure of how much ground one Mendocino selection covered. Plenty of plants get popular. Very few name a category that outlives their own branding.
What is actually in it
Flower runs dense and chunky rather than spear-shaped, light green with purple streaking when rooms finish cool, under a heavy and visibly oily resin coat. Caryophyllene, linalool and humulene all sit in the profile.
The trophies and the lawsuit
The competition history is real: first place at the 2016 Emerald Cup, and Best Indica at the 2015 Cannabis Cups in both San Francisco and Michigan. The inaugural 2023 King of Z Hill flower title went to Royal Budline's Royal Z cut of the plant.
The name change is the other half of the story. Mars Wrigley took Terp Hogz to court over the Skittles-adjacent branding, arguing it traded on the candy brand's pricing power. The settlement let Terp Hogz keep the Z logo under the new name The Original Z, and retired both Zkittlez and the circle-Z mark for good.
Very few cannabis brands have had to rename a flagship at the height of its run and hold the audience anyway. Z did, and the single letter turned out to be all the equity it needed.
Where the letter went next
The Z suffix became a naming convention, and the crosses behind it are worth tracing. Zkittles Mints runs it into the Kush Mints line, Creamy Z pushes the dessert side, and Compound Z takes it somewhere louder.
