Why a clean rig hits better
Concentrate leaves behind reclaim — darkened, re-heated residue that tastes burnt and harsh. A rig caked in old reclaim mutes the terpenes you paid for and makes every dab taste the same. Cleaning is not about looks; it is the difference between tasting the concentrate and tasting last week's leftovers.
Residue builds in three places: the banger or chamber where the concentrate vaporizes, the glass airpath and water it travels through, and on an e-rig, the threads and contacts that connect the heater to the base. Each spot gets its own routine. Get all three right and the fresh jar you just opened tastes like it should.
What you need
- Isopropyl alcohol (ISO), 90% or stronger. Puffco calls for 90%+ on chambers and threads and 99% on glass, because lower-strength ISO carries more water.
- Coarse salt. Kosher or rock salt acts as a scrubber inside glass you can't reach.
- Cotton swabs. Bamboo-stem swabs or honey swabs hold up to warm quartz; plastic stems can melt.
- A zip-top bag or jar for soaking small parts, plus warm water for rinsing.
What stays in the drawer: bleach, acid-based cleaners and anything abrasive. Quartz and borosilicate glass scratch, and scratches give residue somewhere to grab.
How to clean a glass dab rig
- Empty and rinse. Dump the water and rinse the rig with warm water to clear loose debris.
- Soak in salt and alcohol. Add coarse salt and ISO, cover the openings, and shake. For heavy buildup, let it soak first so the alcohol can break down the reclaim.
- Rinse thoroughly. Fill and empty the chamber with warm water several times until no alcohol or salt remains.
- Air dry. Let the glass dry completely before the next session.
Temperature matters on glass too. Never run cold water through a rig or banger that is still hot from the torch. The sudden change is thermal shock, and it is how quartz and glass crack.
How to clean your banger after every dab
The banger (the bucket you heat) is where flavor lives or dies. The easiest habit in dabbing: right after you exhale, while the banger is still warm, swab the inside to lift the leftover oil before it hardens into reclaim. Do that every time and you'll rarely need a deep clean.
Timing is the trick. Bad Ass Glass suggests waiting roughly 30 seconds to a minute after the dab, until the quartz is cool enough for an alcohol-dipped swab but the residue is still soft enough to lift. Gee West Glass describes the same move with an ISO-dipped swab while the quartz is warm, not hot.
Deep cleaning a crusted banger
For a banger that's already crusted, soaking is the fix. Gee West Glass recommends 15–30 minutes in ISO, followed by a thorough warm-water rinse and a full dry. For heavy buildup, Bad Ass Glass goes further: a zip-top bag of 99% ISO and coarse salt, with the banger left in overnight to loosen the residue.
Bad Ass Glass also describes burning off what's left: heating the banger to around 600–800°F turns stubborn buildup into ash that swabs out easily. Push it too far, though, and you pay for it. The same guide warns that running quartz past 1,000°F, or red-hot, leads to cloudiness and a tar-like layer that won't come off.
How to clean an electric dab rig (e-rig)
E-rigs mix glass, electronics, and a heated atomizer, so the rules change:
- Power down and disassemble. Turn the device off and, if possible, remove the battery. Separate the glass attachment and the atomizer from the base.
- Swab the atomizer — don't drown it. Dip a cotton swab in ISO and gently wipe around the chamber or coil. Never submerge the atomizer unless the manufacturer says it's safe, and keep alcohol away from the heating element and battery contacts.
- Clean the glass separately. The removable glass or bubbler cleans like any other glass — alcohol and salt, then rinse.
- Rinse and inspect. Rinse every non-electronic part under warm water until there's no cleaning solution left, then check hard-to-reach spots with a dry swab for moisture before reassembling.
Never take a dab through glass that still holds alcohol. Leftover ISO wrecks the flavor of your next hit, and it is not something you want to inhale, so the rinse step is not optional.
Why the manual beats the rule of thumb
"Swab, don't submerge" is the safe default, but e-rig makers don't all agree, and two popular devices show why the manual wins.
Puffco's support page for the Peak Pro 3DXL and Peak Pro allows a deep soak of the chamber: submerge it in 90%+ ISO for 20 minutes, and never use water on it. Everyday cleaning is a cotton swab with 90%+ ISO. The glass goes into 99% ISO, gets a water rinse, and must dry fully before it goes back on the base.
Puffco is strict about water. It warns against letting water seep into the bottom chamber of the glass or the gold threads of the base, which get their own ISO-soaked swab. Its schedule is simple: a thorough clean when the battery runs flat, and a chamber soak whenever you notice flooding or get a rainbow light response.
Dr. Dabber takes the opposite line on the Boost Evo. Its knowledge base says to swab the eChambers after every use, mop up residue with a dry swab, reach for ISO only on stubborn spots, and never soak the eChambers in ISO or any other liquid.
