District Cannabis is a family-owned cultivator and retailer that has been "weeding the people since 2015" in Washington, D.C. It breeds and grows its own strains, makes flower, pre-rolls, vapes, concentrates, edibles, tinctures and topicals, and runs two dispensaries: one a block from Union Market in Northeast D.C. and one on Valley Mall Road in Hagerstown, Maryland.
Both stores posted live menus on Leafly in September 2026, with 360 products in D.C. and 1,533 in Hagerstown.
A grower, an ex-lawyer and a 2015 start
The company tells its own origin plainly. District grew out of an unlikely friendship between a Gen-X grower and an ex-lawyer who shared a love of cannabis, and it stays family owned and operated.
A February 2020 release put names to the founding team. Ed Weidenfeld was co-founder and chairman, and Andras Kirschner was co-founder and CEO. The same release said District's line had been sold in all seven licensed D.C. dispensaries since 2017, through affiliates growing and processing in Maryland and the District.
Bred and grown in house
District calls itself "cultivators first, not marketers." Its strains are bred, grown and refined in house by its own growers. Instead of chasing the highest THC number, the team selects for the complete cannabinoid and terpene profile.
The house standard is short. Cannabis, District says, should be safe to smoke, stacked with terps and accessible to everyone.
The house flower on the Union Market menu in September 2026 included Gelato Cake, Florida Wedding, Berry Payton, Beach Cake and Pave, each at $35 or $40. Concentrates on the same menu included Pave Sugar, Gelato Cake Badder, Banana Acai Mints Sugar and Super Silver Dawg Crumble, all at $50 a gram.
The Hagerstown glasshouse
Maryland is where District scaled. In February 2020, the company unveiled a cultivation center in Hagerstown, in Washington County, backed by a $9.2 million capital raise. Phase 1 grow rooms were finished, and a Phase 2 expansion was planned for later that year.
The complex was designed to top 82,000 square feet and yield more than six times District's production capacity at the time. Hagerstown's mayor welcomed the operator by its Maryland entity name, District Cannabis/Maryland Cultivation and Processing, LLC.
By 2024 the site had become an 82,000-square-foot glasshouse cultivation and packaging facility. A 23,000-square-foot processing facility in Washington County was set to open that summer.
New leadership in 2024
District reshuffled its executive team on March 1, 2024, in an announcement carried by mg Magazine. Bethany Frick became CEO after more than 20 years at Total Wine and Diageo. Bryce Freeman became COO, with a background at Procter & Gamble and McCormick & Co.
The release listed Sheila Weidenfeld as co-owner, Kirschner as head grower and Grace Hyde as director of commercial and production operations. Hyde said the aim was to hire locally and grow the team to 50.
The same announcement laid out the retail plan: a flagship at Union Market in May 2024, then a 5,000-square-foot Maryland dispensary, the company's third investment in Washington County.
A self-certify storefront near Union Market
The D.C. flagship sits at 513 Morse Street NE, a block from Union Market, under license ABCA-126338. Leafly lists it as established in April 2024, and it opens at 11 a.m. daily.
D.C. runs a medical program, and the store works inside it. D.C. residents self-certify in store with proof of residency, free and with no physician visit. Out-of-state visitors can self-certify for a minimum three-day certification at $10, and the store honors reciprocity for out-of-state medical patients. District also delivers across the District.
The sales floor is built around the house genetics. Lightboxes describe every in-house strain, including its cross and its cannabinoid and terpene profile.
Valley Mall Road in Hagerstown
The Maryland store, District Cannabis Hagerstown, sits at 17276 Valley Mall Road and serves both medical and adult-use customers under license DA-23-00113. It runs 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
That puts District's Maryland retail, cultivation and processing all in Washington County. The company publishes separate product sheets for its D.C. and Maryland menus.
Khalifa Kush, Maryland gummies and the 2026 shelf
District's stores carry more than the house brand. The Union Market menu in September 2026 listed Khalifa Kush flower and sauce cartridges next to District's own Khalifa Kush flower. On September 2, 2026, District's blog spotlighted gummies from Maximum Wellness, a family-owned Maryland company.
