Phat Panda is a cannabis company founded in Spokane Valley, Washington in 2014 by Robert and Katrina McKinley. What began as the flower identity for Grow Op Farms now anchors a twelve-brand portfolio covering flower, concentrates, vapes, edibles, beverages and pre-rolls, with regulated operations in Washington, California and Massachusetts.
Founders and origin
The McKinleys founded Grow Op Farms in 2014 after building businesses in marketing. Phat Panda had been the name of a marketing company before employees encouraged the founders to use it for cannabis flower. They hired experienced cultivators, including early head grower Andrew Guy, to pair their business and branding background with plant expertise.
Growth in Washington
The operation started with roughly thirty people and grew into a large Tier 3 producer at 2611 N Woodruff Road in Spokane Valley. The company now reports more than 850 team members and identifies Phat Panda as Washington's number-one producer for seven consecutive years, from 2019 through 2025, on BDS and Headset rankings.
Cultivation at scale
Grow Op Farms developed a room-based indoor system using coco coir, controlled environments, dedicated crop teams, sanitation staff and continuous phenotype selection. The founders call the model large-scale boutique: repeatable production with cultivation, extraction, packaging and shipping kept in house.
The twelve-brand family
Phat Panda flower sits alongside Dabstract concentrates, Hot Sugar edibles, Panda Pen and Juice Box vapes, Bangers and Firecracker pre-rolls, Cake House, Kandy Shoppe, Snickle Fritz and Eluzion flower, and Hot Shotz beverages. The structure lets the company segment formats and price points without forcing everything under the Phat Panda flower label.
Concentrates, edibles and vapes
Dabstract covers concentrates and single-source live resin, Hot Sugar covers edibles, and Panda Pen and Juice Box cover vape formats. On April 15, 2026 the company released four Dabstract live-resin strains: Pineapple Mintz, Tropical Trifle, Blueberry Pancakes and Apple Tartz, hand-pressed from fresh-frozen flower grown one room over from the extraction operation.
Multi-state expansion
In November 2025 Phat Panda entered Massachusetts, putting its flower, Hot Sugar edibles and Dabstract concentrates into licensed adult-use dispensaries across the Commonwealth. Each state's products are made within that state's regulatory system; federal law prevents ordinary interstate shipment of Washington cannabis inventory.
Awards
At the 2019 High Times Seattle Cannabis Cup, Dabstract's Orange Zkittlez Live Resin Pax Pod took first place in Vape Pens and Cartridges, and the Sixth Fifths x Phat Panda Point Break Live Rosin Batter took third in Non-solvent Hash. In September 2024 readers named Phat Panda Best Cannabis Brand in The Inlander's Best of the Inland Northwest awards, for the second consecutive year.
The April 2026 Dabstract release added Pineapple Mintz, Tropical Trifle, Blueberry Pancakes and Apple Tartz as single-source live-resin products. Fresh-frozen material is processed near the grow, but the product name does not make every batch identical. The package supplies the cultivar, extract format, cannabinoids, license and lot information for the item sold.
Buying across three states
Washington, California and Massachusetts operate separate cannabis systems. Products carrying the same family name are cultivated, manufactured, tested and packaged within the state where they are sold. A Washington item cannot be shipped to a Massachusetts buyer as ordinary ecommerce merchandise, and each retailer controls live inventory, package sizes and pricing.
Reading the brand family
Phat Panda flower is only one part of the portfolio. Dabstract identifies concentrates, Hot Sugar identifies edibles, and Panda Pen and Juice Box identify vape lines; the pre-roll and value labels occupy their own lanes.
