Founders and origin
Robert and Katrina McKinley founded Grow Op Farms in 2014 after building businesses in marketing. Phat Panda had been the name of a marketing company before employees encouraged the founders to use it for cannabis flower. The McKinleys hired experienced cultivators, including early head grower Andrew Guy, to pair their business and branding background with plant expertise.
Growth in Washington
The operation started with roughly thirty people and grew into a large Tier 3 producer in Spokane Valley. Independent reporting documented its early million-dollar sales months, extensive flowering rooms, and leading Washington output. The current company site reports more than 850 team members and identifies Phat Panda as Washington's number-one producer from 2019 through 2025 based on BDS and Headset rankings.
Cultivation at scale
Grow Op Farms developed a room-based indoor system using coco coir, controlled environments, dedicated crop teams, sanitation staff, and continuous phenotype selection. Earlier reporting described dozens of flowering rooms and up to eighty cultivars in rotation. The founders call the model “large-scale boutique”: repeatable production with internal cultivation, extraction, packaging, and shipping.
The twelve-brand family
Phat Panda flower sits alongside Dabstract concentrates, Hot Sugar edibles, Panda Pen and Juice Box vapes, Bangers and Firecracker pre-rolls, Cake House, Kandy Shoppe, Snickle Fritz and Eluzion flower, and Hot Shotz beverages. The brand family lets the company segment products and price points without forcing every format under the Phat Panda flower label.
Flower and notable cultivars
Flower remains the flagship. Historical best sellers included Golden Pineapple and OG Chem, which Robert McKinley credited to Andrew Guy's selection work; independent reporting also lists Trophy Wife, Lavender, God's Gift, Grand Daddy Purple, and F#?k Yeah Strawberry. Current drops rotate, so cultivar availability is market- and batch-specific.
Concentrates, edibles, and vapes
Dabstract covers concentrates and single-source live resin, Hot Sugar covers edibles, and Panda Pen and Juice Box cover vape formats. In April 2026, the company announced Dabstract live-resin releases Pineapple Mintz, Tropical Trifle, Blueberry Pancakes, and Apple Tartz made from fresh-frozen flower grown near the extraction operation.
Multi-state expansion
Phat Panda's current footprint is Washington, California, and Massachusetts. The company announced Massachusetts availability in November 2025 for Phat Panda flower, Hot Sugar edibles, and Dabstract concentrates. These products are produced within separate state regulatory systems; federal law prevents ordinary interstate shipment of Washington cannabis inventory.
Awards and rankings
The official ledger lists a 2019 High Times Seattle Cannabis Cup first place for Dabstract Orange Zkittlez vape pens, a third place for Point Break Live Rosin, and 2018 DOPE Cup wins for an infused pre-roll and GMO flower potency, plus six Dabstract placements. Spokane readers also selected Phat Panda as Best Cannabis Brand in consecutive Inlander awards through 2024.
The High Rise assessment. Phat Panda's achievement is operational: the McKinleys turned a marketing name into a high-output cultivation and brand platform while keeping a clear Spokane Valley identity. The founders, 2014 start, product family, Washington scale, multi-state footprint, and named awards are supported. Rankings are dated, state products are not interchangeable, and “craft at scale” remains the company's positioning rather than an independent quality guarantee.
