Puffco is a Los Angeles concentrate-vaporizer company founded by Roger Volodarsky in 2013. It helped move electronic dabbing from pen-style devices into a recognizable category of temperature-controlled rigs, modular glass, pocket devices, and heated loading tools led by the Peak, Peak Pro, Proxy, and Pivot.
Founder and Brooklyn origin
Volodarsky began developing concentrate hardware in a Brooklyn basement in 2013 after seeing limitations in existing vaporizers. Puffco's early design brief rejected fibrous wicks, glued bowls or coils, and plastic in the airpath. The company combined industrial design, electronics, glass, and temperature control around the goal of making concentrates easier to use.
The original Peak
Puffco introduced the Peak publicly around CES in January 2018. Its small, upright form combined a water-filtered glass top, electronic heating, and a ceramic chamber in a device that looked distinct from both pens and torch-fired glass rigs. Early demand was strong, while contemporary reviews also documented defective units and limited battery and atomizer serviceability.
Peak and Peak Pro today
The current Peak is the simpler desktop-style device. Peak Pro adds Bluetooth app connectivity, deeper temperature and session customization, wireless charging support, and the larger 3DXL chamber. Replaceable glass and chamber components make the platform expandable, and artist Ryan Fitt has produced recycler glass accessories with Puffco since 2018.
Proxy modular platform
Proxy separates the electronic 3D Chamber core from the glass pipe that holds it. That modular idea allows one heater to move among first-party and artist-made glass attachments. The current Proxy line is designed for concentrates including rosin, resin, water hash, budder, shatter, diamonds, and dry sift, subject to device compatibility and maintenance requirements.
Pivot and pocket use
Puffco launched Pivot in October 2024 as a pocket-sized concentrate device. It offers four heat settings, real-time temperature control, a two-year device warranty, and an optional adapter for 10- and 14-millimeter glass joints. Pivot joined the Plus pen, Hot Knife loading tool, Peak, Peak Pro, and Proxy as a distinct portability tier.
Software, chambers, and accessories
Puffco's ecosystem extends beyond base devices to 3D and 3DXL chambers, replacement glass, travel cases, charging accessories, the Hot Knife, and app controls for supported hardware. This creates upgrade paths but also ties performance to proprietary consumable components. Compatibility should be checked by exact device generation rather than by the Puffco name alone.
Warranty and service record
Warranty length varies by device and part. Pivot advertises two years; Puffco's August 2026 update extends Peak 3D, Proxy 3D, and Peak Pro 3DXL chamber coverage to six months. The company also announced electronic-device price increases tied to component costs. Historical reports of early Peak defects belong in context and do not establish the failure rate of current generations.
Awards and design recognition
The original Puffco Peak won Gold for Product Design at the 2019 Clio Cannabis Awards. Credits named Volodarsky, head of product development Avi Bajpai, design engineer Roger Sayre, and industrial designer Justin Cohen. That is a specific, independently listed design award; broader claims that every Puffco product is award winning are not made here.
The High Rise assessment. Puffco's impact is product-category creation: Volodarsky and his team turned the electronic dab rig into a coherent design platform, then split it into desktop, modular, and pocket use cases. The 2013 origin, 2018 Peak debut, current lineup, component ecosystem, warranty facts, and 2019 Clio are supported. Performance superlatives remain manufacturer claims, and long-term ownership includes chamber replacement and cleaning.
