Terphogz is a Mendocino County cannabis breeding group and genetics brand best known for developing and popularizing the fruit-forward cultivar now marketed as The Original Z. The official company history names Green R. Fieldz and Tony Mendocino as founders. Independent cultivation reporting also places Jondo with the Terp Hogz breeding trio and documents collaborations with 3rd Gen Family and Dying Breed. Founder, breeder, grower and competition entrant should remain separately credited when sources differ.
The Original Z legacy
The cultivar became famous for a candy-like tropical and berry aroma and for its usefulness in crosses. Its exact parentage remains partly undisclosed and disputed in public strain databases. Terphogz's role is best described as developing, selecting, branding and popularizing the cut—not as proof that every plant labeled “Z” descends authentically from its stock.
Seed and breeding portfolio
The current site lists regular and feminized seed lines such as Blooberry Z and newer Z-centered crosses, with breeder-stated lineage, flowering time and yield. Those specifications are estimates under particular conditions, not guarantees. Seed sales also may be restricted by destination law.
Awards and competition record
The official history cites first-place results at Chalice, High Times, Secret Cup and Emerald Cup events. The 2016 Emerald Cup record lists a first-place outdoor entry under the older cultivar spelling and a third-place collaboration among 3rd Gen, Terp Hogz and Dying Breed. Awards belong to the named entry and team.
Wrigley trademark litigation
Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company sued Terphogz in 2021 over marks and packaging resembling its SKITTLES candy brand. A July 2023 consent judgment and permanent injunction required Terphogz to abandon specified trademark applications, relinquish the former cultivar-name domain and stop the prohibited marks and allusions.
Name changes and source caution
The brand now emphasizes The Original Z, while its website and historical coverage still contain legacy wording. Readers should distinguish cultivar history from present trademark rights. Old packaging, domains and social posts may be inaccurate or barred; they are not reliable evidence of an authorized current product.
Authenticity and responsible use
Verify seed packs and cannabis products through official channels and confirm the licensed cultivator or manufacturer in the state of sale.
