The company dates its founding to 1879, when brothers Maurice and Jacques Braunstein developed an interleaving booklet system that allowed one paper to pull the next into position. Zig-Zag’s official history says the Braunstein brothers received a gold medal at the 1900 Universal Exposition in Paris and registered the familiar Zouave trademark in 1906. Production became associated with Thonon-les-Bains, France. The name refers to the zig-zag interleaving process. That distinction is useful because Zig-Zag is not a cannabis cultivator or dispensary.
