That lateral spread is what a plain downstem never gives you: more water contact per unit of tube length, which is exactly the constraint you're fighting on a piece this short. Seven and three-quarter inches doesn't leave room for a tall diffusion stack, so GRAV solved it with geometry rather than height.
Building the downstem in also removes the most common breakage on a small water pipe. Nothing to pull out, nothing to snap in a drawer, nothing to lose.
The trade is the usual one — you can't soak the stem separately, so cleaning is an in-place job with isopropyl and coarse salt, and you want to do it before the perc slots glaze rather than after. A clogged mushroom perc takes several passes to bring back and drags on every pull until you do.
The curved body isn't styling for its own sake. The waist narrows where your hand goes and carries a textured grip band, which matters on a piece with a 4.75-inch base — wide enough to be stable, wide enough that a smooth cylinder would be awkward to lift one-handed. GRAV has been designing out of Austin on an airflow-and-ergonomics-first premise long enough that the shapes tend to have a reason; this is one of the clearer examples.
The 14mm joint is standard sizing, which is worth more than it sounds. Every replacement bowl, every ash catcher, every banger you'll ever consider fits it. It also means the Oracle is genuinely dual-purpose without any modification: drop a 14mm banger in the joint and the mushroom perc handles concentrates as readily as it handles flower. You're not buying a second piece.
Compare that to the Gravitron 2.0, which runs an 18.8mm fitting and a gravity mechanic that doesn't accommodate a banger at all.
Who this is for: the smoker who wants a piece that performs with no learning curve and no ceremony. There's nothing to time, lift, or coordinate — you pack it, pull it, and set it down. That's a real category and it's underserved, because the market keeps pushing either novelty mechanics or display glass.

Fill the chamber until the mushroom's slots are covered and no further — over-filling a short piece is the fastest route to a wet mouthpiece, and the Oracle's compact body gives you less margin than a beaker would.
