Blueberry — usually credited as DJ Short Blueberry — is the indica-leaning cultivar that set the bar for real fruit in cannabis. It comes out of Afghani, Highland Thai and Purple Thai material worked over years of selection starting in the late 1970s. Dense, purple-capable flower, a genuine ripe-berry character, and an easy euphoria that settles into physical calm. It also seeded a whole family tree.
Where It Comes From
DJ Short built Blueberry from imported landrace and near-landrace material on North America's west coast, with the work running in the Pacific Northwest from the late 1970s and the keeper phenotype identified in the early 1980s.
Three P1 lines sit behind it. A Highland Thai, also called Juicy Fruit Thai, grown from first-generation Thai seed in the Pacific Northwest. A Purple Thai that was itself a first-generation Chocolate Thai crossed to a first-generation Highland Oaxaca Gold. And an Afghani indica one generation removed from Afghanistan, by way of the California and Southern Oregon growing community.
What separates the project from most breeding of its era is the target. Short ran large seedling populations — sometimes hundreds — and selected on terpene expression and the character of the experience rather than on yield or raw potency. That choice is why the name still carries weight decades later.
The Cross
The shorthand lineage, Afghani x Highland Thai x Purple Thai, is an accurate ingredient list but a compressed one. The real build runs in two steps. Flo is the Purple Thai crossed to the Afghani male, and Blueberry comes from Flo crossed back to the Highland Thai "Juicy Fruit." Years of F2 selection followed.
The finished line runs roughly 20% sativa and 80% indica, with a 40-to-55-day indoor flower. Structure is short, stocky and dense, and the plant colors up through red to purple to blue as it finishes. Purple is possible here, not proof — plenty of purple flower has nothing to do with this line.
Blueberry later moved through European seed companies and countless growers, which is why the name on a package can mean several related but non-identical things. DJ Short remains the origin breeder, and the cut you want is the one grown slow and dried slower.
What It Left Behind
The 2000 Cannabis Cup is the clean record, and the details matter. Blueberry entered by the coffeeshop The Noon took first place in the overall Cup, while Blueberry entered by Dutch Passion took first place in the Indica category. Two entrants, two placements, one year.
The larger footprint is genetic. Blue Dream is the most visible descendant, and Blue Cheese, Blue Widow, Blue Moonshine and Bubble Berry all trace back, alongside a long tail of hybrids claiming Blueberry somewhere in the line.
