Insane OG is an indica-dominant hybrid from Barney's Farm and B-Real of Cypress Hill, bred from OG Kush, Bubba Kush and Granddaddy Purple. It was the first release in the seed collaboration between the Amsterdam breeder and B-Real's Dr. Greenthumb's.
The strain dropped globally on June 19, 2025, at Mary Jane Berlin, the European cannabis expo. Barney's Farm launched it at 27% THC.
From Amsterdam coffee shops to a seed collab
Barney's Farm was founded in Amsterdam in 1986 by Derry Brett. Its relationship with B-Real goes back to the city's coffee shop circuit in the early 1990s, and both sides describe the collab as the formal version of a friendship that started there.
The name nods to B-Real's own catalog. Barney's Farm says Insane OG was inspired by "Dr. Greenthumb," the Cypress Hill single from the 1998 album IV. The song gave its title to B-Real's cannabis business, which now runs stores in California with expansion into Illinois.
At launch, B-Real dedicated the release to the heads who had backed him since before the hype. Brett, for his part, said every strain Barney's ships has been stress-tested and refined before it leaves the house. A second collab strain, Cherry Bomb, followed in September 2025.
Three California indicas in one cross
Insane OG stacks three well-known indica lines rather than the usual two parents. OG Kush gives the cross its name, with Bubba Kush and Granddaddy Purple filling out the rest of the family. Barney's Farm rates the finished plant at 75% indica and 25% sativa.
Bubba Kush turns up across modern breeding too. It is one half of Kush Mints, its cross with Animal Mints. Granddaddy Purple, the third parent, completes the three-parent lineup.
The terpene lineup follows that makeup. Barney's lists caryophyllene, limonene and myrcene as the main terpenes, with a flavor of earth, gas, pepper and spice over a kush base.
How Insane OG grows
Indoors, plants reach 100–120 cm and flower in 55–65 days, yielding around 600 g/m².
Outdoors, plants stretch to 150–250 cm and are ready in the third or fourth week of September. Barney's puts the outdoor yield at up to 2,000 grams per plant in the right conditions.
Potency figures have climbed since the launch. The Mary Jane Berlin announcement listed 27% THC, while Barney's current product page lists Insane OG at 32%.
Effects and where it fits
Barney's describes the effects as happy, relaxing, sociable and uplifting. It frames the high as euphoric up top with a physical ease that relaxes without heavy sedation, which lines up with the 75% indica rating.
For Dr. Greenthumb's, Insane OG extends a brand that started as a song title into international seed genetics. For Barney's Farm, it adds an OG, Bubba and Granddaddy Purple cross to a catalog built over four decades in Amsterdam.
The collab also gives B-Real a strain that tells his own story. The name, the 1998 anthem and the early-1990s Amsterdam friendship all come together in one seed pack, with Cherry Bomb carrying the partnership forward.
