Northern Night is an indica from Buddy Buddy Indoor Natural, the San Francisco brand built around heavy-hitting strains with loud terpene profiles. It crosses two landraces, Afghani and Thai, and the seed was germinated in Seattle before the plant came south.
The headline number came from a 2020 review by Respect My Region, which listed a tested batch at 28.6% THC and 0.08% CBD.
Two landraces in one plant
Afghani is named for the region where some of the earliest cannabis is believed to have grown. Leafly lists it as an indica landrace with short, dense, trichome-heavy buds, and notes that breeders worldwide prize it for heavy resin production that passes down genetically.
Thai comes from the other end of the map. It is a pure sativa landrace that reached the United States in the 1970s and 1980s, earning the name Thai Sticks from the way its buds were dried and tied onto sticks.
Thai also sits behind Voodoo, Juicy Fruit and the classic Haze. It is tough to grow outside the tropics and runs a long flowering period, so greenhouse growers usually handle it.
Northern Night pairs that resin-heavy Afghani base with an old-school Thai sativa. Buddy Buddy still sells the result as an indica. Leafly puts both parents in the 18–19% THC range, well under the numbers Northern Night has posted.
A Bay Area indoor release
Buddy Buddy Indoor Natural, as the full name says, grows indoors. Respect My Region's Erin Lapsansky reviewed Northern Night for her West Coast Weed Tour series on November 9, 2020, and called it her favorite product of the tour so far.
The review singled out the flower's color, a clean flush and a solid cure. It also praised the pink packaging as both good-looking and informative, with the brand's website and social handles printed right on the bag.
That attention to the jar lines up with a moment when California packaging started to matter as much as the flower, the shift covered in Get to the Bag, on cannabis mylar as fine art.
On Ngaio Bealum's list
Northern Night also made cannabis writer Ngaio Bealum's top 8 cultivars roundup in the Sacramento News & Review in April 2020. Bealum described a smooth buzz and a creamy profile.
He gave the credit to the grower as much as the strain. Buddy Buddy, he wrote, understands how to develop good flavors, and he rated all of the brand's products as excellent.
Two independent write-ups landed within the same year, one from Sacramento and one from the West Coast Weed Tour. Both put Northern Night front and center for Buddy Buddy.
How it hits
Respect My Region described the effect as very much a body high with a calm finish. That fits the Afghani side of the cross and the indica label on the bag.
Flavor ran sweet, spicy and floral in that review. With a batch testing near 29% THC, Northern Night sits firmly in the heavy end of the menu, a nighttime pick that matches its name.
