Zaburst is a Blue Chip Genetics hybrid bred from Zkittlez and Sunset Sherbet. Purple Lotus, the San Jose dispensary that holds the Blue Chip brand, lists it in its Blue Chip strain guide as a fully organic cross that burns to a white ash.
The guide first ran on June 30, 2021, and was updated on August 24, 2026. Zaburst sits there beside Blue Chip names such as Gangsta Bird, Georgia Pie and Butter Mintz.
From an Oakland seed hunt to San Jose
Blue Chip has roots in both Santa Rosa and Oakland. Purple Lotus dates the story to 2008, when two UC Davis biochemistry graduates began hunting and cross-breeding genetics in Oakland. Its founders once spent a year searching the globe for rare and exotic seeds.
In 2012 the original strain went to an expert cultivator and took the name Blue Chip. Purple Lotus acquired exclusive rights to the strain and the brand in 2013. At its peak, more than 30% of Purple Lotus customers bought Blue Chip products.
Tommy Chong picked Blue Chip in a blind taste test. The company's Durban Poison also won a High Times Cannabis Cup.
Grown indoors at Purple Lotus
Blue Chip flower is grown indoors at Purple Lotus's own San Jose facility, which the dispensary built with an investment of more than $1 million. It brought a group of geneticists together there, and the experimenting took more than two years. Blue Chip sells only through Purple Lotus's two San Jose stores and its delivery service.
The lineup that came out of that work mixes dessert and gas crosses. Gangsta Bird crosses Gelato 33 with Extreme Cream. Georgia Pie pairs Gelatti with Kush Mintz, and Butter Mintz crosses Animal Mints with Bubba Kush. Carbon Fiber is a rare indica cross, and The Glove, Cream Puffz and Garlic Butter round out the guide.
Zkittlez on one side
The first parent is Zkittlez, which Leafly now lists as The Original Z. The cultivar traces back to a grower known as Gas Station Bob. Terp Hogz growers Fields and Tony Mendo popularized it, working with Brandon Parker of 3rd Gen Family.
Zkittlez took 1st place at the 2016 Emerald Cup and later won the 2023 King of Z Hill. Terp Hogz adopted The Original Z name in 2023 after a trademark settlement with a candy company. Leafly classes it as an indica hybrid with medium, spongy green colas, a short-to-medium height and an 8–10 week flowering time.
Sunset Sherbet on the other
Sunset Sherbet comes from Mr. Sherbinski, the breeder behind Sherbinskis. Leafly lists it as an indica-dominant hybrid made by crossing Girl Scout Cookies with Pink Panties. It also travels as Sherbet, Sherbet OG and Sunset Sherbet, and Leafly puts its THC around 18%.
Growers see oblong, fluffy buds with heavy trichome coverage and dark amber hairs over light and dark green leaves. Leafly gives it a 63–72 day flowering window, average height and a medium yield.
Leafly describes full-body effects lifted by a jolt of cerebral energy. Purple Lotus credits Zaburst with a jolt of brain energy paired with powerful, full-body effects. That puts it in a candy-and-sherbet family rather than the OG or cake lanes, with California competition history on the Zkittlez side.
