A Golden State

Website: https://www.agoldenstate.com

A Golden State grows top-shelf flower in Northern California, under the Cascades, on snowmelt off Mount Shasta. It sits at the connoisseur end of the market on the strength of a proprietary genetics program rather than a celebrity name, and it now runs its own dispensary in Redding.

Where It Grows

The brand calls itself born and raised in Northern California, under the watch of the Cascade Mountains, and the water is the part it will not stop talking about. The flower is irrigated with glacial snowmelt running off Mount Shasta — volcanic terrain that leaves the water mineral-rich, naturally alkaline and low in pollutants.

That is not decoration. Small-batch cultivation lives or dies on inputs, and starting with clean alkaline water off a volcano is a real advantage over a grow pulling municipal supply. The brand's own imagery leans on the same geography, shot around Mossbrae Falls in Dunsmuir.

The Genetics Are The Whole Pitch

A Golden State breeds its own. The proprietary library is the product of over a decade of deliberate, selective breeding, aimed at exclusive strains with cannabinoid profiles, terpene profiles and growth patterns that do not exist elsewhere. Moonbeam is the cut that travels furthest outside the brand's own channels.

Selection is formalized into a seven-point screen before a cultivar earns a slot: node structure and spacing, uniform canopy growth, cannabinoid and terpene profile, yield, trichome production and color, bud structure and density, and how it actually smokes. Plenty of brands say they are picky. Fewer publish the checklist.

Who Runs It

Rob Masterson is co-founder and chief of cultivation; Nishant Reddy is co-founder and CEO. The company describes itself as minority-owned and predominantly female-run, and it puts that at the front of its own materials rather than in a footnote.

The Redding Shop

A Golden State opened its first flagship store in 2023 at 6744 Lockheed Drive in Redding, open daily from 10 AM to 8 PM under license C10-0000877-LIC. In-house brand as the top shelf, a curated bench of outside brands around it — a cultivator running its own retail floor, which is still rarer in California than it should be.

What They Actually Fund

The cultivation runs carbon-neutral on renewable energy, hydroelectric first. Packaging skews non-plastic and recyclable, including recycled glass with tops made from ocean plastic, and there is a take-back program for spent vape pens.

Beyond the grow: a partnership with the ACLU of Southern California on voter rights, criminal justice and drug policy reform, funded at three percent of proceeds per jar sold; limited-edition Open Your Heart sets for Breast Cancer Awareness Month with all proceeds to the Shades of Pink Foundation; PPE donated to local hospitals during the pandemic; and relief giving through the Red Cross, CARE and International Medical Corps for Ukraine.

The High Rise Take

This is a grower's brand. No famous co-signer, no origin myth doing the heavy lifting — just a genetics program they have been compounding for more than ten years and a water story they can point at on a map. If you are the kind of buyer who reads the breeder before the label, A Golden State is built for you.

Find it across licensed California retail, including Green Door in San Francisco, plus collaborations with the Sweet Flower chain and the brand's own Redding storefront.
