Catalyst Cannabis is a California dispensary chain — more than 30 licensed storefronts from Long Beach to Daly City — built on cheap weed, deep menus, and a founder who argues with regulators in public. If you shop by price and still want clean product, this is the shelf you want.
A Retailer, Not a Brand on a Shelf
Catalyst is a retail operation first. It runs the stores, sets the prices, and fills its cases with other companies' cannabis — a directory that runs past a hundred brands. Catalyst-labelled and Cat4-labelled products sit on the menu too, but the business here is the storefronts, not one flagship flower.
From One Long Beach Store
Founder and CEO Elliot Lewis opened the first Catalyst in Long Beach in 2020 and never slowed down. The chain came out of the legacy market — the hills, the helicopters, the years before Prop 64 made any of this legal — and it still talks like it. Growth since has been fast and loud rather than quiet and boutique.
Weed For The People
That slogan is the whole pitch. Menu prices include tax, so the number on the shelf is the number at the register — a small thing that kills the ugliest surprise in California retail. Budtenders are hired as actual smokers and pointed at your budget instead of the most expensive jar in the case.
Beyond the register there is a podcast, a blog, an events calendar and a community arm called Catalyst Cares — the platform side of the same argument, used to put a spotlight on people and brands doing it right.
The Cat 4 Fight
Lewis is the rare operator who picks fights on the record. He spearheaded the Cat 4 push, which pressured brands to volunteer their product for testing wider than the state requires, after it became clear some were using pesticides California labs did not routinely screen for.
He has also pulled brands off the shelf over consumer-safety problems, taken public runs at the Department of Cannabis Control over weak oversight, and gone after the UFCW on behalf of cannabis workers. The Cat4 line now carries the deepest product count in the store.
What's Actually on the Shelf
The buy list is not a value-only list. Alien Labs, 710 Labs, CAM, Fig Farms, Connected, Raw Garden and Rove sit in the same directory as the cheap house pre-rolls, across flower, prerolls, vapes, concentrates, edibles, drinks, tinctures and topicals. The range is the point: a house single and a connoisseur jar in one trip.
Where to Find Them
Catalyst is no longer only a Southern California story. Long Beach still holds the densest cluster — Belmont Shore, Cherry Ave, Downtown, Retro Row — alongside Los Angeles, Hawthorne, Lynwood, El Monte, Pomona, Lancaster, Van Nuys and Silver Lake.
Orange County has Costa Mesa, Santa Ana and Planet Catalyst in Stanton. The Inland Empire and San Diego, the Central Coast at Grover Beach, Marina, Oxnard and Watsonville, and Northern California at Antioch, Daly City and Patterson round it out. Every storefront lists its own state retail licence.
Two stores break the mould. SWED by Catalyst on Long Beach's east side runs under its own banner, and Hawthorne pairs a dispensary with a consumption lounge that opens Thursday through Sunday for people who want to smoke where they buy.

Catalyst is what a chain looks like when smokers run it. The prices are the hook and the volume is the business model, but the respect comes from the willingness to name bad actors out loud in an industry that mostly stays quiet. Adults 21+ only, same as any California dispensary.
