At a glance

Farmer and the Felon is a California cannabis brand from CannaCraft, built around the prohibition-era histories of CannaCraft co-founders Dennis Hunter and Ned Fussell. Launched in 2020 with flower and pre-rolls, it now connects a broader product catalog to legacy-farm collaborations and cannabis-justice advocacy.

The two founders behind the name

Dennis Hunter grew up in Mendocino County and began cultivating as a teenager. Ned Fussell moved from Massachusetts to Northern California in 2007 to pursue cultivation. They co-founded CannaCraft in 2014; the “farmer” and “felon” language reflects roles and consequences that both shaped the company’s early identity rather than two anonymous mascots.

Dennis Hunter’s prohibition history

CannaCraft’s launch record says federal agents raided Hunter’s Humboldt County cultivation site in 1998 and found roughly 7,000 plants. He spent about four and a half years on the run and more than six years in federal prison.

Why the brand launched

CannaCraft introduced Farmer and the Felon in May 2020 as an affordable flower-and-pre-roll line with a social-justice purpose. The name was designed to reconnect a large regulated manufacturer with California’s legacy cannabis movement while reminding buyers that people remain burdened by cannabis convictions even as legal sales expand.

Current flower formats

The present product catalog lists eighths, quarter ounces, ounces and half-ounce smalls. A Legacy Collab Series sources flower from smaller California farms that operated during the 1996–2017 Proposition 215 era and later entered the licensed market.

Pre-rolls, rosin and collaborations

The line has expanded beyond uninfused flower to standard pre-rolls, infused pre-rolls, a Kalya infused pre-roll and cold-cure rosin. These categories are visible in the current catalog, but not every product appears at every retailer. Collaboration labeling should identify the contributing farm or processor rather than implying all inputs were produced in-house.

The Last Prisoner Project connection

The 2020 launch announcement states that a portion of profits supports Last Prisoner Project, a nonprofit focused on restorative justice for people harmed by cannabis prohibition. The brand’s cause page continues the advocacy theme.

Legacy Collab packaging

The brand discloses recycled-material choices for its Legacy Collab package: jars made with 58% recycled glass, child-resistant lids made from reclaimed ocean plastic, recyclable components and paper/printing specifications.

Awards and notable recognition

No complete product-award ledger is published on the current brand site. CannaCraft’s launch release notes Hunter was twice included in High Times’ annual “100 Most Influential People in Cannabis,” but that is individual recognition, not a product competition win.
