Holistic Industries is a privately held, vertically integrated multistate cannabis operator headquartered in Washington, D.C. Josh Genderson founded it in 2011, and it grows, manufactures and sells a house of eight brands, from Strane and Stash to Garcia Hand Picked, while running the Liberty Cannabis dispensary chain.
The sharpest 2026 move came through the Garcia family. On June 5, 2026, Garcia Hand Picked relaunched statewide in California, with Holistic and the Garcias choosing sun-grown producer Solful to make it.
From a wine and spirits family to a D.C. license
Holistic grew out of a multigenerational family wine and spirits business in 2011, when cannabis was newly legal in the District. The company won its first grower and processor license in Washington, D.C., in 2012.
Before scaling up, leadership went to school on the plant. The company's history lists study trips to Colorado, California, Canada and the Netherlands to learn cultivation practices. In 2019, Genderson put it plainly: "We started as a family business and have those values at our core."
Licenses, a $55 million round and one company
The multistate run started in 2017, when Holistic won licenses in Maryland, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. In 2019 it expanded its executive team and folded every state operation, brand, store, grow and processing facility into a single company under the Holistic Industries name.
Money and marketing followed that same autumn. Holistic announced a $55 million raise on October 17, 2019, then hired Kyle Barich as chief marketing officer on October 21 to build out its national brands. On December 9, 2019, it committed $20 million to a Michigan headquarters in Madison Heights, on the site of a former Fairlanes bowling alley.
How the Garcia family picked Holistic
Genderson had turned down every licensing opportunity that came his way until a chance meeting with Red Light Management, which had Jerry Garcia's estate as a client. Forbes reported that the Garcia family valued a senior team with its own Deadhead roots, and Genderson calls himself a Deadhead.
Holistic became the official cultivation and distribution collaborator for Garcia Hand Picked, which reached select California dispensaries in mid-November 2020. Launch strains included Chemdog, SFV OG and Fire OG, alongside Jerry's Picks, gummies shaped like Jerry's guitar picks.
Barich framed the stakes in Forbes: "If Snoop and Bob Marley and Willie Nelson already have [cannabis] brands, Jerry was the only one missing." The packaging came in recycled paper with matches and a custom glass tip bearing Jerry's handprint.
Madison Heights, Arbor Pacific and the 2021 buildout
May 2021 brought a second $55 million, a convertible note led by the Harbert Stoneview Fund. New Cannabis Ventures reported more than 500,000 square feet of grow and processing capacity, more than 600 employees and 12 licenses won in Missouri and West Virginia.
The Michigan bet opened on June 12, 2021, with a grand-opening block party at Liberty Madison Heights. The 64,000-square-foot former bowling alley put provisioning, cultivation and processing under one roof for adult-use and medical customers. It carried more than 60 brands at opening and added 150 jobs.
That year Holistic also trimmed its map, exiting some states and stores, and acquired Arbor Pacific. The deal added Oregon and Washington operations and the Avitas brand, founded in 2014 in the Pacific Northwest.
Eight brands under one roof
The portfolio covers flower, pre-rolls, vapes and edibles, each with its own site:
- Strane, the flower-led line built to show craft cannabis grown at scale.
- Stash, pitched as simple, reliable and easy to choose.
- Garcia Hand Picked, developed with Trixie Garcia and the Garcia family.
- Hellavated, a vape and edible line spanning 510 cartridges, all-in-ones, Helly Meltz, Juicy Stickz and Gummiez.
- Do Drops, the edible range.
- Sunny Jays, multipack joints.
- Avitas, with flower, 10-pack pre-rolls, Ultra cartridges and live resin carts and disposables.
- Cannaceutica, a capsule line of broad-spectrum cannabis oil that launched in Massachusetts in January 2023.
Liberty Cannabis, home of Team Green
Liberty is the retail face, and it calls its staff Team Green. The store page says Liberty hires local talent and features local brands in every store. Openings kept coming: the Dormont neighborhood of Pittsburgh on November 18, 2022, and Somerville, Massachusetts, which opened for adult-use on December 18, 2023.
Holistic's 2026 store roster runs across six states:
- California: Beach Center in Gardena.
- Maryland: Baltimore, Oxon Hill and Rockville.
- Massachusetts: Easthampton, Somerville and Springfield.
- Michigan: Detroit and Madison Heights.
- New Jersey: North Brunswick.
- Pennsylvania: Aliquippa, Bensalem, Cranberry Township, Norristown, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Willow Grove.
Garcia goes home and the 2026 footprint
By 2023 Holistic listed dispensaries, grows and brand sales across eight states: Oregon, Washington, California, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Maryland and West Virginia. The Garcia line now sells in six of them: California, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Oregon and Pennsylvania.
The California relaunch rebuilt the brand's home supply chain. The Garcia family and Holistic chose Solful to make it, Kiva Sales & Service distributes it statewide, and Liberty Beach Center sits among the first 13 California dispensaries on the list. Trixie Garcia called the move a way of "honoring Jerry's legacy the right way."
