Holistic Industries is a Washington, D.C.-based cannabis company that grows, makes and sells its own product across eight states. It runs its own cultivation sites, a house of brands led by Strane and Garcia Hand Picked, and the Liberty Cannabis dispensary chain, making it one of the largest privately held operators in the country.
Where It Comes From
The company started in 2011, spun out of a multigenerational family wine and spirits business right as legal cannabis was becoming a real industry. Founder Josh Genderson built it off a single application: in 2012, Holistic won the grower and processor license it had applied for in Washington, D.C.
That first team went hunting for knowledge the East Coast did not have yet, traveling to Colorado, California, Canada and the Netherlands to learn from growers and processors already doing the work. The licensing discipline stuck. By 2017 Holistic had taken competitive licenses in Maryland, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, and people started calling it a multi-state operator.
In 2019 it folded its states, brands, stores and facilities into one entity. When the 2021 squeeze hit and oversupply crushed prices, Holistic walked away from certain states and stores, then acquired Arbor Pacific and picked up Oregon and Washington. By 2023 it was selling across eight states.
What They Actually Make
Holistic runs a house of brands instead of one label. Strane is the flagship, built on cultivars budtenders actually push and grown at scale. Garcia Hand Picked is the Grateful Dead collaboration, where Trixie Garcia and the Garcia family choose the strains, products, packaging and merch that get to carry Jerry's name.
Hellavated came up in Oregon and travels on flavor, with well-priced vapes, edibles and joints in Bomb Popz, Mango Dragon and OG Mint. Sunny Jays is the multipack preroll play. Avitas is the Northwest line, locally grown around a Seed to Summit outdoor-living idea. Do Drops handles edibles, Cannaceutica handles capsules.
Where You'll Actually Find It
Retail runs under the Liberty Cannabis banner: fifteen stores across five states, with Pennsylvania the deepest at six in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Bensalem, Norristown, Aliquippa and Cranberry Township. Massachusetts and Maryland carry three apiece, Michigan has Detroit and Madison Heights, and California has Gardena.
Liberty plays it hometown, hiring local and stocking local brands in every store, running a loyalty program called Liberty Wallet, and putting in community work down to food drives and highway clean-ups. Holistic also wholesales into hundreds of dispensaries, so these brands turn up plenty of places that have no Liberty sign out front.

The grow list says more than the corporate timeline does. Simien Mints out of Monson, Massachusetts. LA Baker from New Castle, Pennsylvania. Garlic Butter in Capitol Heights, Maryland. Alien Mints in Madison Heights, Michigan. Those are region-specific grows running their own cultivars, not one recipe copy-pasted across a map.
The cultivation crews are also first in line to buy what they grew once it hits the shelf, which is the flex that actually means something. Pair that with an advocacy record on legalization, regulation and equity running back to 2011, and this reads as an operator that got big without going corporate about the plant.
