Holistic Industries is a privately held, vertically integrated U.S. cannabis operator founded in Washington, D.C. in 2011. It cultivates and manufactures state-specific products, runs Liberty Cannabis dispensaries, and owns consumer brands including Strane, Garcia Hand Picked and Do Drops.
Founder and origins
Josh Genderson founded Holistic after working in his family’s multigenerational wine and spirits business. The company says it won its first D.C. grower-processor license in 2012, then studied established cultivation and manufacturing programs in Colorado, California, Canada and the Netherlands before building its medical-cannabis operation.
How the company grew
Holistic added competitive licenses in Maryland, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania in 2017, expanded into California and Michigan, and consolidated its state operations, brands, stores and facilities into one investable company in 2019. Its 2021 acquisition of Arbor Pacific added Oregon and Washington operations, though later market exits narrowed the footprint.
Current footprint
Holistic’s current terms identify operations in California, Michigan, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. Its live store page lists 15 Liberty locations across California, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Brand wholesale can reach additional regulated markets, so store count and brand footprint are not the same metric.
Liberty Cannabis stores
Liberty is the retail banner and loyalty ecosystem. Current stores include Gardena; Easthampton, Somerville and Springfield; Baltimore, Oxon Hill and Rockville; Detroit and Madison Heights; and six Pennsylvania locations. Store menus mix Holistic products with local third-party brands and should not be treated as a list of company-owned labels.
Brand portfolio
Strane is the broad flower-led house brand, built around named cultivars and multiple form factors. Garcia Hand Picked is developed with Jerry Garcia’s family, including Trixie Garcia, and returned to California in 2026 through licensed cultivation and distribution partners. Do Drops is an effect-positioned edible line with formulations such as Relax, Focus, Sleep, Energy, Relief and Mild.
Production model
Because federally illegal cannabis cannot move between states, Holistic’s flower, extracts and edibles are cultivated or manufactured by licensed operations within each market. A brand name can remain consistent while genetics, ingredients, package sizes and the legal manufacturer change by state. The package and batch COA are therefore more authoritative than a national overview.
2024 Massachusetts enforcement
Massachusetts regulators ratified a final order concerning mold conditions and testing practices at Holistic’s Monson facility. The order states that Holistic neither admitted nor denied detailed allegations, required corrective measures and imposed a $200,000 total payment. The regulator said the mold remediation plan had been fully implemented by May 2022.
Subsequent safety advisory
In February 2025, Massachusetts issued a public-health advisory naming Holistic among licensees associated with potentially contaminated flower or pre-roll batches that exceeded yeast-and-mold limits on additional testing. Consumers must compare the exact product and batch number; these actions are material safety history but not evidence that every Holistic product was affected.
What to verify. Use the local Liberty menu or licensed retailer to confirm availability, then check the package for the in-state licensee, manufacture date, ingredients and COA. The company’s historical eight-state expansion claim is not presented as its current operating footprint; current pages support a narrower set of operating jurisdictions.
