Lowell Herb Co. is the pre-roll pack brand that dressed whole-flower joints in 1909 farm lore. It launched in Southern California in 2017. In 2026 the brand says it is based in the Hudson Valley region of New York, with operations across the country.
The lineup still centers on packs: Lowell Smokes, Lowell 35's and Lowell Quicks. A hemp-derived version ships direct to consumers through Lowell Supply.
Bull Lowell and the 1909 farm
The brand's story opens in the spring of 1909, when William "Bull" Lowell grows what the company calls Indian hemp on a farm on California's central coast. It makes a great label. A 2018 New Yorker profile made clear that Lowell is a fictional character and that the company was established in 2017, after Proposition 64 legalized adult use in California.
David Elias founded the company. Its early investors brought star power: Miley Cyrus, Sarah Silverman, Mark Ronson and Chris Rock all put money in.
Smokes, 35's and Quicks
Lowell built its name on the multi-joint pack. Lowell Smokes was the original line, and the company says it rolls full flower with no shake or trim.
On September 29, 2022, Lowell began selling Lowell 35's in three blends: Trailblazer, Mind Safari and Stargazer. Lowell Quicks followed in 2023, according to the company's own timeline.
Collaborations are part of the playbook. In 2019 Lowell worked with C.J. Wallace on the Frank White blend, built from Orange Sherbet, Banjo and Rattlesnake Sour Diesel.
In August 2024 Lowell Farms Inc. teamed with TYSON 2.0, the brand co-founded by Mike Tyson, to make TYSON 2.0 35's in California. Each pack held 10 joints totaling more than 3.5 grams. Launch retailers included Harborside, One Plant and The Reef.
Glass tubes, dated packs and a West Hollywood cafe
Lowell's craft pitch has always run through details. The Higher Path dispensary noted in a 2019 vendor spotlight that the company started pesticide testing in early 2017, before the state required it. It also packed single pre-rolls in glass tubes instead of plastic.
Every Lowell pack comes dated, a point the company made in a July 22, 2025 post on the Lowell Supply blog.
On October 1, 2019, the brand opened Lowell Farms: A Cannabis Cafe in West Hollywood, a licensed consumption cafe that put the Lowell name on a storefront instead of a shelf.
Who has owned Lowell
In February 2021, Indus Holdings announced it was acquiring substantially all of the assets of Lowell Herb Co. and Lowell Smokes from The Hacienda Group. The package covered the trademarks, product portfolio and production assets, in a deal valued at about US$39 million.
Indus renamed itself Lowell Farms Inc. and began trading on the Canadian Securities Exchange as LOWL on March 5, 2021. From its Salinas headquarters it ran Lowell next to Cypress Cannabis, House Weed, The Original Pot Co. and MOON, with Mark Ainsworth as CEO by 2024.
In October 2023, Lowell Farms moved the Lowell Herb Co. and Lowell Smokes trademarks into LF Brandco LLC, whose membership interests went to the holders of its repurchased debentures. Lowell Farms kept an exclusive five-year license to the Lowell marks in California.
PitchBook lists Lowell Farms Inc. as out of business as of February 15, 2026. Lowell products stayed on 2026 shelves in California, Illinois, Missouri and New York.
Licensing Lowell beyond California
Lowell started leaving California in 2021. In April of that year it announced a licensing agreement with Ascend Wellness Holdings to bring Lowell pre-rolls to Illinois and Massachusetts. Chairman George Allen called Lowell Smokes a brand that deserves a home in every market where adults can buy cannabis.
In 2026, Weedmaps shows Lowell on dispensary menus in Illinois, Missouri and New York. Its brand page lists 35's, Smokes and Quicks packs alongside cartridges, all-in-one vapes, flower and solventless concentrates.
The same page lists New York adult-use processor license OCM-PROC-24-000013. New York's Office of Cannabis Management registers that license to Alchemy Pure LLC, an active processor in Dutchess and Columbia counties in the Hudson Valley, with a license term effective March 27, 2026.
Lowell Supply and the hemp-derived line
Lowell Supply launched on July 3, 2025, as a direct-to-consumer shop. Everything sold there is made with hemp-derived THCa flower at no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight, under the 2018 Farm Bill. THCa products don't ship to some states, New York among them.
The catalog mirrors the dispensary lineup. It carries Lowell Originals in 6-packs, Lowell Quicks in 10-packs and the Old Hundred Club, a box of 100 joints at 0.35 grams each. Flower by the zip, bundles and a metal ashtray round it out.
Where Lowell stands in 2026
California shelves still carry the name. The Rose Collective in Venice listed Lowell pre-rolls, infused pre-rolls, flower and bubble hash on a brand page updated March 31, 2026, including the Trailblazer, Mind Safari and Stargazer blends.
The brand's homepage now places Lowell in the Hudson Valley, with operations spanning the country, while the 1909 story stays on the label. Lowell Supply runs under a 2026 copyright.
