Founding story
PLUGPLAY was started in 2017 by three lifelong friends who had known one another since high school and began working from a garage. The PLUG and PLAY system
The core system separates a magnetic oil pod from a rechargeable battery. That architecture made the hardware recognizable and let PLUGPLAY treat batteries as durable accessories rather than disposable packaging. The current site divides its catalog into PLUGS, AIO, PLAY, and JOINTS, while selling batteries separately and directing shoppers to authorized retailers.
Oil lines and menu structure
PLUG products have been organized into named tiers including DNA, LIVEST, and Exotics. The distinction is more useful than treating every oil as equivalent: DNA has carried broad flavor and positioning concepts, LIVEST identifies live-resin offerings, and Exotics contains limited or flavor-led releases. Exact strains and formulas rotate by state and production partner.
All-in-ones and joints
The AIO line brings oil and battery into one device, while JOINTS extends the brand beyond extraction hardware. Tang described single joints, infused joints, and a six-pack built from indoor flower and kief in a 2024 interview. He also acknowledged that cultivation was not the company's original specialty and said flower products were developed with cultivators in its network.
Artist Series and collaborations
The Artist Series uses original full-color battery artwork, custom collector packaging, and limited releases to turn reusable hardware into a collaboration surface. A documented 2024 partnership with Insomniac's RNBW paired a Guava Groove Exotics pod with a glow-in-the-dark collaborative battery for Hard Summer. Earlier collaborations cited by Tang included Carrots, Desto Dubb, and These Foos.
Markets and licensed operations
The current regional navigation lists Southern California, Northern California, Washington, Colorado, and New York. Those are separate regulated markets, not proof that one California product travels across state lines. The California site displays distribution license C11-0001471-LIC and manufacturing license CDPH-10004734; local availability should be checked through each region's authorized-retailer channel.
Hemp line is a separate channel
PLUGPLAY also operates a distinct hemp-derived storefront offering pods, batteries, all-in-ones, JUSTPLAY products, and pre-rolls. That line shares branding and Los Angeles roots with the regulated cannabis business but operates under a different legal framework. A product from the hemp site should not be represented as the same formula, testing regime, or retail channel as a state-licensed cannabis item.
Authentication and recycling
Counterfeit control matters for a proprietary vape platform. PLUGPLAY provides an authentication path and tells buyers to use authorized retailers. Its JUST RECYCLE program has collected spent PLUG pods and PLAY batteries with GAIACA Cannabis Waste Solutions; the RNBW event page documents dedicated collection boxes. Program access can vary by event and market.
