Borosilicate, and why it is the spec that matters
Borosilicate is the glass used for laboratory equipment and cookware because it expands very little when heated. Ordinary soda-lime glass expands more, and uneven expansion is what cracks a piece when hot smoke meets cold water.
On a bong that gets used and washed constantly, that difference decides how long it survives. It is the reason a borosilicate piece can go from a session to a warm rinse without the thermal shock that ends cheaper glass.

Dump and refill the water after every couple of sessions, and give the chamber a proper soak in isopropyl and coarse salt once a week. Plug the joint and mouthpiece, shake it in short bursts rather than one long rattle, and rinse with warm — not hot — water so the glass never takes a thermal shock.
