The tradeoff is honest: you cannot swap in a different bowl or upgrade the downstem later, and cleaning takes a proper soak because you cannot pull the stem out and scrub it separately. For a piece meant to travel and take knocks, that is a fair trade.

A beaker base is wider than the neck, which does two useful things. It lowers the centre of gravity so the piece resists a stray elbow, and it holds a wider pool of water for the smoke to break across.
At 4.5 inches the chamber is short, so pulls are quick and the smoke has less distance to cool. This is a piece for fast, direct hits, not the slow lung-filling draw of a full-size tube.

Keeping it clean

Dump and refill the water after every couple of sessions, and give the chamber a proper soak in isopropyl and coarse salt once a week. Plug the joint and mouthpiece, shake it in short bursts rather than one long rattle, and rinse with warm — not hot — water so the glass never takes a thermal shock.
