Affogato is Maven Genetics' indica cross of Purple Chai and Sunset Sherbet, named for the Italian dessert where espresso gets poured over gelato. That is the whole idea: roasted coffee and dark chocolate on top, sweet cream underneath. It lifts fast and lands heavy, and the dessert framing is earned by roast and spice rather than sugar.
Where It Comes From
Maven Genetics is a California brand that breeds its own library in-house rather than running other people's cuts. Affogato is a clean example of the method: take a house-bred parent, cross it with one of the state's most influential dessert cultivars, and name the result after the thing you were chasing.
The clearest proof it worked is that Maven kept using it. Ube Crème, another Maven release, is Affogato crossed with Grape Cuvée — an indica whose deep purple color, warm spice, cacao and vanilla exhale trace straight back to what Affogato contributes.
A strain only becomes a parent inside a breeder's own program when it passes traits along reliably. Plenty of good flower never earns that; it comes out right once and then throws siblings that do not. Affogato earned it, which is a quieter credential than a cup and a more useful one.
The Cross
Maven Genetics holds both breeder and brand credit. The cross is Purple Chai crossed with Sunset Sherbet, and Maven classifies the result as indica.
Purple Chai is Maven's own, out of Dosilato and Triangle Kush. It carries the spice, the deep pigment, the resin and the Kush backbone, and its terpene reporting leads with caryophyllene, limonene and humulene — which lines up with the peppery warmth running through Affogato.
Sunset Sherbet handles the other half: creamy berry, citrus peel, sweet earth and Cookies-family bud structure. What comes out of the pairing reads as roast rather than coffee flavoring — bitter-edged, a little burnt-sugar, with baking spice sitting behind it and cream arriving on the finish.
Flower is dense and colorful, green-to-purple bracts with orange pistils and heavy trichome coverage. Purple Chai drives the darker pigment; Sherbet adds the contrast. Potency figures on a menu belong to specific tested lots and say nothing reliable about the cultivar as a whole.
What It Left Behind
No competition placement attaches to Affogato — no cup, no category, no year — and award-winning language printed on a menu is not an award. Its real footprint is internal: Affogato earned a place in Maven's own breeding stock.
For a brand that grows what it breeds, that is the highest-value slot a cultivar can occupy. It is not in rotation because it markets well. It is there because the people running the room kept choosing it over the alternatives.
