Banana OG is a hybrid bred by OrgnKid, the grower behind a run of OG-era classics that also includes Ghost OG, Blackberry Kush, Sour OG and Cherry Bubba Kush. He made it by crossing his OG Kush clone with a banana-leaning male pulled from a mixed bag of Sagarmatha seeds sold as "60/40."
The most notable thing about Banana OG is how unplanned its fruit side was. The male did not come from a named banana cultivar. It came out of a seed lot that was never meant to be a breeding line at all.
An ounce of seeds from an online auction
OrgnKid found the seeds on Seedbay, an online auction, and paid a couple of hundred dollars for an ounce labeled 60/40 from Sagarmatha Seeds. The lot was not a deliberate cross. It was a grab bag of seeds from breeders around the world that Sagarmatha had set aside and rejected.
He grew out roughly 250 of them. Five plants carried an unmistakable banana character, but none delivered much of a high on their own. So he went back into the same seed stock, found a male that carried the banana trait and set it aside for breeding.
The OG Kush clone behind the cross
The other half of Banana OG was a prized OG Kush cut. OrgnKid paid $5,000 upfront for the clone and owed another $40,000 in product. He began making seeds from it, which caused friction with the original source, who had not expected the cut to end up in seed form.
That same OG Kush phenotype later picked up a new name from the people who handled it next: Ghost OG. The plant that anchored Banana OG went on to carry its own reputation under that title.
OrgnKid crossed the banana male onto this OG Kush female, then hunted through the F1 seeds. The keeper he pulled from that search is the plant he named Banana OG.
How the seeds spread
OrgnKid did not keep the line to himself. He sold original F1 seed stock to several parties, Gypsy Nirvana among them, and that circulation helped Banana OG travel far beyond one garden.
The story got a fuller telling in January 2024, when the Archive podcast from Archive Seed Bank released a 77-minute interview with OrgnKid on the creation of Banana OG, Ghost OG and more. The episode title alone lists the two cultivars most tied to his name, and both trace back to the same OG Kush cut.
From the jar to the wash and beyond
Among hash makers, Banana OG is known for turning out candy-banana gas in solventless form. Breeders keep coming back to it too, and it has been crossed repeatedly into modern varieties.
Connected Cannabis Co. is one example. Its Dosi & Banana pairs Banana OG with Dosilato #26 and lands as an indica-dominant hybrid with dense, dark green and purple buds and copper-tinted pistils.
Leafly lists Banana OG as an indica-dominant hybrid averaging around 21% THC, with limonene, caryophyllene and myrcene as its leading terpenes. Its effects build slowly, and it has a reputation as a creeper that settles into a relaxed, sleepy finish.
