Gelato #33, better known as Larry Bird, is one of the original numbered Gelato phenotypes from Mario Guzman, the Bay Area breeder known as Mr. Sherbinski. It comes from a cross of Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint GSC. Sherbinskis, which calls itself the home of the original Gelato, carries the family today.
Number 33 is one of only six Gelato cuts Guzman recognizes as official. The nickname comes from Larry Bird's retired Boston Celtics jersey number.
How Guzman built the Gelato line
GreenState laid out the origin in a May 2024 piece by Cara Wietstock. Guzman reversed Sunset Sherbet, crossed it with Thin Mint GSC and produced feminized seeds. He then labeled the resulting plants by number only.
Friends did the rest. They started matching the numbers to athletes who wore them, and the sports names stuck. The approach made the strain famous in a way Guzman did not plan.
Prime Cuts Nursery credits the line to the Cookie Fam and Sherbinskis circle. It dates the pheno hunt to 2014 and says Mr. Sherbinski handed the cut out freely, which spread production across the country by 2015.
Six official numbers, and a lot of copies
Guzman stands behind six phenotypes. They are #25 Barry Bonds, #33 Larry Bird, #41 Bacio Gelato, #43 Gello Gelato, #47 Mochi Gelato and #49 Açaí Berry Gelato. Sister cuts such as Mochi Gelato and Gello Gelato share the same Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint GSC parents.
Other numbers circulate too. GreenState notes that Gelato 45 and Gelato 42 exist on the market without Guzman's approval. Guzman told the outlet that people attach the Gelato name wherever it adds value.
Today Sherbinskis sells Gelato family flower indoors and in live rosin joints, live resin cartridges and a dual-chamber vape called the Quattro.
A tall plant that needs a trellis
Conception Nurseries grows #33 from clone and describes a tall, vertical plant. It has long internodes, little side branching and dense, elongated colas that need trellising during flower. The nursery puts flowering at about 60 days and notes average susceptibility to pests and mold.
Color is part of the draw. Conception recommends dark-cycle temperatures near 70°F from week 6 or 7, held for at least three weeks, to bring out full color. Prime Cuts describes deep green flowers with purple hues and fiery orange pistils.
Prime Cuts quotes indoor yields of 500–600 g/m² and outdoor yields of 700–900 g per plant, with outdoor harvest from late September to mid-October. It rates the grow as moderate, with some sensitivity to temperature swings.
Numbers from the lab and the menu
Conception reports average THC of 29–32% in its #33 runs, with caryophyllene, limonene and humulene as the leading terpenes. Its flavor read is sweet and fruity with fuel, vanilla and cream.
Leafly lists Gelato #33 as a hybrid averaging 20% THC, with caryophyllene, limonene and myrcene on top. It records Gelato Kush and G33 as alternate names and describes compact buds that stay true to the Cookie side. Users there tag it as uplifting and energetic, while Conception calls the effect deeply relaxing.
