Mochi Gelato, usually shortened to Mochi, is Gelato #47 from Sherbinskis. It is one numbered keeper from the original Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint GSC cross, the same seed run that produced the rest of the Gelato family.
Sherbinskis started in San Francisco's Sunset District and is now based in Los Angeles. Its founder, Mario Guzman, counts Mochi among the Gelato-line cuts he brought to market alongside Bacio, Gello and Acai Berry.
Numbers on the pots: how Gelato #47 got its name
Guzman, known as Mr. Sherbinski, made Gelato with his partner Jigga around 2014. In a 2017 Cannabis Now interview, he described popping roughly 200 seeds from the cross, cutting about 75 early and bringing around 25 phenotypes to a tasting.
The plants were too good to keep just one or two. The numbers people now treat as names, like 25, 33 and 41, were simply the labels on the pots. Mochi carries the number 47 from that same run.
That makes Gelato 33 and Mochi siblings rather than parent and child. Both come from the same seeds and the same two parents, then split into separate selections once each keeper was named.
Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint GSC
Sunset Sherbet is the other half of Sherbinskis' early story. Guzman grew it before Gelato and has said he knew it was special for how uplifting it felt. Thin Mint GSC, a Cookies-family cut, completes the cross.
Every original Gelato number shares that pairing. What separates Mochi is the individual plant Sherbinskis picked from that population and carried forward under its own name.
The wider family keeps growing. Guzman's Gelato line runs through Bacio (Gelato #41), Gello and Acai Berry, and his strains have been name-checked in more than 300 hip-hop songs. Gelato itself turned 10 in 2024.
Dense purple buds and an indica lean
On Weedmaps, Mochi is listed as indica with a THC range of 20–26%. The listing describes dense green and purple buds, orange-to-red pistils and a heavy trichome coat. Aliases there include Mochilato, Gelato 47, Mochi Lato and White Mochi.
Sherbinskis calls Mochi an indica-leaning smoke with fruity, creamy flavor that turns toward earthy mint. The brand pitches it as a creative, functional high that does not clobber the mind, with a heavy body feel balanced by an uplifting edge.
Seedfinder files Mochi Gelato as mostly indica and suited to both indoor and outdoor growing. Sherbinskis offers it only as feminized seed, so home growers get the #47 line through the breeder itself.
From garage grow to branded eighths
Guzman first moved to San Francisco for real estate. When that market fell, he began growing in his garage and built relationships with Northern California dispensaries before founding Sherbinskis. He now serves as Global Head of Genetics at B Noble, the cannabis education group co-founded by Fab 5 Freddy.
Mochi now ships as Sherbinskis-branded eighths, sold as Mochi Gelato. A keeper that began as a number on a pot now carries its own name and packaging inside the Gelato family, next to Bacio, Gello and the original 33.
