Permanent Marker built its reputation on the nose alone: grape candy and creamy berry cut with something solvent-sharp, like the felt tip itself uncapped in a closed room. Bred by Seed Junky Genetics and launched through Doja Exclusive, it went from a handful of shelves to hundreds of menus in about a year and picked up back-to-back Strain of the Year honors along the way.
Where It Comes From
Seed Junky's JBeezy built Permanent Marker in Los Angeles, with the cross taking shape in the years leading up to its 2022 release. Doja Exclusive selected the cut, put a name on it, and launched cuttings that sold for roughly $1,000 apiece at the start.
The push worked fast. Permanent Marker went from a handful of menus to one of the most-run genetics on the West Coast inside a year, and cultivators have since used it as a parent in its own right, breeding new crosses on top of it.
The Cross
Permanent Marker is a three-way stack: Biscotti S1 crossed into Sherb Bx1, then folded into a select cut of Jealousy. Biscotti brings the Cookies-family dough and spice. Sherb Bx1 is a backcross that concentrates the creamy, tangy Sunset Sherbet side. Jealousy, Seed Junky's own Gelato and Sherbet backcross, adds the color, resin, and gas that tie the plant together.
Seed Junky Genetics bred it; Doja Exclusive picked the commercial phenotype and brought it to market. That split matters, because the name travels further than the cut does, and plenty of flower carries the label without the selection behind it.
Crack a jar and the name-brand note lands first: sweet grape candy and creamy berry riding over a solvent, almost-marker-ink edge. Phenotype decides where it goes from there. One direction runs peppery mint and sweet cookie dough, another a soapier, gassier funk with candy and floral tones on top. Flower runs dense and heavily frosted, with dark green and purple patches under bright orange pistils, a look loud enough to match the jar.
Most tested batches land in the mid-20s percent THC range, and the commonly described arc runs relaxed, tingly, and euphoric, a settle-in cultivar more than a get-things-done one. Start low with an unfamiliar batch, never drive or operate machinery after use, and let dose, tolerance, and setting do more of the talking than the name on the label.
What It Left Behind
Back-to-back Strain of the Year honors put it in rare company, but the more durable credential is how quickly other breeders started working with it. Inside a couple of years it went from a boutique cutting to a standard parent in West Coast breeding programs, and to a name copied onto far more flower than Doja ever released.
The High Rise Take
We keep coming back to Permanent Marker because the nose actually delivers on the hype. Most loud strains oversell either the candy or the gas; this one runs both at full volume without either side canceling the other out. Don't rush it. Give the jar a minute to open up and it earns the reputation.
