Permanent Marker built its reputation on the nose alone: grape candy and creamy berry cut with something solvent-sharp, like the felt tip itself uncapped in a closed room. Bred by Seed Junky Genetics and launched through Doja Exclusive, it went from a handful of shelves to hundreds of menus in about a year.
A thousand dollars a cutting
Seed Junky's JBeezy built Permanent Marker in Los Angeles, with the pairing taking shape in the years leading up to its 2022 release. Doja Exclusive selected the cut, put a name on it, and launched cuttings that sold for roughly $1,000 apiece at the start.
That price is the market pricing scarcity rather than plant material. A clone is a clone; what buyers were paying for was a head start on a cut everybody could see coming, before the copies flooded in.
The push worked fast. Permanent Marker went from a handful of menus to one of the most-run genetics on the West Coast inside a year, and cultivators have since used it as a parent in its own right.
A three-way stack
The build is a Biscotti S1 crossed into Sherb Bx1, then folded into a select Jealousy cut. Biscotti brings the Cookies-family dough and spice. Sherb Bx1 is a backcross that concentrates the creamy, tangy Sunset Sherbet side.
Jealousy, Seed Junky's own Gelato-and-Sherbet backcross, adds the colour, the resin and the gas that tie the plant together. Three lines, all from the same house, all pointed at the same target.
Seed Junky bred it; Doja Exclusive picked the commercial phenotype and brought it to market. That split matters, because the name travels further than the cut does, and plenty of flower carries the label without the selection behind it.
What comes out of the jar
The name-brand note lands first: sweet grape candy and creamy berry riding over a solvent, almost-marker-ink edge. Phenotype decides where it goes from there.
One direction runs peppery mint and sweet cookie dough. Another goes soapier and gassier with candy and floral tones on top. Flower runs dense and heavily frosted, with dark green and purple patches under bright orange pistils, a look loud enough to match the jar.
The commonly described arc runs relaxed, tingly and euphoric, a settle-in cultivar more than a get-things-done one.
The name outran the cut
A plant this recognisable gets copied, and Permanent Marker got copied harder than almost anything of its generation. Within two seasons the label was on shelves in markets Doja had never shipped a cutting to.
Why it became a parent so fast
Leafly's 2023 Strain of the Year designation accelerated its visibility, but the more durable credential is how quickly other breeders started working with it.
Inside a couple of years it went from a boutique cutting to a standard parent in West Coast breeding programs, and to a name copied onto far more flower than Doja ever released. Breeders reach for a plant that passes down both resin and a distinctive profile, and this one does both.
