Shangri-La is an indica-dominant hybrid bred and grown by Maven Genetics in Los Angeles. It crosses Opal, a Maven limited edition, with Paradiso #11, a numbered selection from a Seed Junky and Capulator cross.
The keeper came out of a very small hunt. Maven popped only 15 seeds, and the plant it kept exceeded expectations across all marks, in the company's words.
A keeper from a 15-seed hunt
Before it carried a name, Shangri-La reached shelves as Opal x Paradiso #11. Maven sold it through its R&D line, a run of limited micro-batches built around its newest strains.
Each R&D bag carried a QR code linking to a survey. Buyers could fill out the survey, leave feedback and enter to win Maven merchandise. Maven pitches the program as a way to bring consumers into its phenotype-hunting process.
Maven usually works at a larger scale. The company hunts big populations and releases only standout selections; its Blue Lotus, for example, was chosen from 12 phenotypes before joining the limited Black Box Series. Shangri-La came from a much smaller pool.
Weedmaps credits Maven with more than twenty years of growing experience. The company's recent cup record backs that up: at the 2023 High Times Cannabis Cup SoCal, Maven took first place with Orange Bellini and second with FKAFL.
Opal and the Saber Artist Series
Opal is the Maven parent. It crosses Blue Agapē with Carbon Candy, and Blue Agapē itself comes from Blue Lotus × White Runtz. Maven lists Opal as an indica-dominant hybrid with violet buds and copper pistils.
Opal first appeared as a limited edition in Maven's Artist Series. That release was a collaboration with the graffiti artist Ryan Weston Shook, known as Saber.
Opal is also a parent of Prizm, which crosses Opal with Permanent Marker #12, and Seeds & Clones calls it Maven's newest male for recent releases.
Paradiso and the Seed Junky connection
Paradiso brings in outside genetics. Seed Junky and Capulator bred it by crossing Purple Push Pop with Cap Junky. Maven grows it as an indica-dominant hybrid and lists it at 34% THC.
Paradiso joined Maven's Spring 2023 Strain Collection, a seasonal pheno-hunt that highlighted work from SeedJunky, Capulator and Compound Genetics. Leafly describes it as dense flower streaked with purple and green, and Maven's own page calls the buds sticky and multicolored. Reviewers on Leafly describe a relaxed but talkative high.
Forest green and violet
Maven describes Shangri-La as mountainous buds in forest green and royal violet under a white coat of trichomes. On the palate it finishes tart and candied.
Weedmaps rates the flower at about 30% THC and lists it in eighths, quarters and half ounces. Its listing names creative, euphoric, happy, relaxed and uplifted effects, and Maven frames the strain around peace and calm.
The strain sits in the Hybrid section of Maven's strain library, next to Silver Iris OG, Golden Applez and French Lotus. Maven started as a small closet grow in the San Fernando Valley and now runs indoor rooms with seed-to-sale quality control.
