White Runtz

Type: hybrid

White Runtz is the frosted, high-trichome side of the Runtz family: a selection built on the same Gelato x Zkittlez base that put Runtz on the map, sold through the Cookies brand and recognizable by a coat of resin heavy enough to bleach the bud toward white.

Where It Comes From

Runtz, the family White Runtz belongs to, broke out at the Emerald Cup in December 2017, pushed by the Long Beach crew around rapper Yung LB. It moved fast enough to earn Strain of the Year honors in 2020, and by 2018 a frostier, paler-leaning selection was already circulating under the White Runtz name.

Cookies picked it up and put it on shelves alongside the rest of the lineup, then went further, partnering with Oregon's Compound Genetics on a feminized White Runtz seed line. That line later produced Zruntz, a Zkittlez 2.0 x White Runtz cross, and Rose Gold Runtz, an Apples & Bananas x White Runtz cross.

White Runtz isn't a knockoff riding the Runtz name. It's a documented branch of the same family tree, with a seed program behind it and descendants of its own, which is more than most of the spinoffs in this family can say.

The Cross

The base genetics are Gelato x Zkittlez, the same pairing behind the original Runtz. White Runtz is the selection out of that cross chosen for maximum trichome coverage, the phenotype that looks like it was rolled in sugar.

That resin density is the whole story behind the name. It has nothing to do with leaf or stem color, which still runs through the same purple-and-green range as the rest of the Runtz line. If a jar labeled White Runtz isn't visibly frosted, the label is doing more work than the plant.

Cookies is the presenting brand and Compound Genetics handled the feminized seed work. Between the two, this is one of the better-papered selections in a family where most spinoffs carry no documentation at all.

What It Left Behind

The 2020 Strain of the Year recognition belongs to Runtz itself rather than to this selection, and it is worth keeping those straight. White Runtz's own footprint is commercial: a Cookies shelf staple and a seed-line parent, which is a more useful kind of standing than a trophy.

Its descendants make the case. Zruntz and Rose Gold Runtz both trace back through it, which is how a phenotype graduates from a nickname into a documented line.

The High Rise Take

White Runtz earns its spot on the shelf without needing the Runtz name to carry it. The trichome coverage alone tells you what you're getting. If this is your speed, the rest of the Runtz lineup and its Cookies-bred offshoots are the natural next stop.
