Matrix perc versus a plain showerhead
A matrix perc works on the same principle as a showerhead but runs taller and cylindrical, with slits cut around the whole body rather than a single ring near the base.
More slits mean more separate bubbles, and more bubbles mean more surface area in contact with water. Since that contact is what pulls heat out of smoke, stacking bubbles the way a matrix does is a direct upgrade in smoothness over a basic perc at the same height.

Keeping it clean
Percolated glass traps resin where a cloth will never reach. Change the water every couple of sessions, and once a week plug both ends and soak the chamber in isopropyl and coarse salt. Shake in short bursts rather than one long rattle, then rinse with warm rather than hot water so the glass never takes a thermal shock.
