Blue Dream is a sativa-dominant hybrid that surfaced in Santa Cruz medical cannabis collectives around 2003. The accepted lineage crosses Haze with DJ Short's Blueberry. It spread as a clone-only cut with no breeder, no brand and no label attached.
By 2015 it was the top seller in both Washington and Colorado. Leafly reported that no other strain crossed over as a top seller in both states.
A clone out of the Santa Cruz collectives
Leafly's Ellen Holland went looking for the strain's origin in a 2021 feature and never found a local who would claim it. Blue Dream appeared as a clone-only offering in Santa Cruz collectives starting around 2003. That was the medical era, when strains were the brand.
The setting helps explain the plant. Santa Cruz sits on the northern edge of Monterey Bay, between redwood forest and ocean, with a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. Growers in the San Lorenzo Valley work behind a ridge that keeps the marine layer out and the area dry and warm.
DJ Short's Blueberry meets Santa Cruz Haze
Blueberry dates to the late 1970s, and DJ Short describes it as roughly 80% indica. It won first place overall and first place indica at the 2000 High Times Cannabis Cup.
Haze had been circulating in Santa Cruz since the 1970s. Leafly traces it through the Brotherhood of Eternal Love and the Haze Brothers, who distributed rather than bred it. Dave Watson, known as Sam the Skunkman, later carried California genetics to Amsterdam. Dutch breeders built Super Lemon Haze and Super Silver Haze from that material.
Ed Rosenthal told Leafly the two parents were very different varieties. Blue Dream also flowers much faster than Haze, finishing indoors in eight to nine weeks against Haze's 11–13.
One name, several plants
Weedmaps counts four genetic packages sold as Blue Dream. The most common version pairs DJ Short's Blueberry F5 with Santa Cruz Haze. The Northern California clone is known for varied phenotypes and heavy yields rather than one fixed look.
Mystic Seeds sells a Blueberry × OG Kush version. Humboldt Seed Organization offers a sativa-dominant feminized seed, and DJ Short released his own take as Azure Haze. The Kush-influenced cuts carry more body weight than the Haze versions.
Built for big rooms
Leafly lists an average flowering time of 67 days and yields up to 430 g/m². The plant grows well in a sea of green, can stretch in flower and throws more than one phenotype. It is prone to powdery mildew and spider mites.
Weedmaps puts indoor flowering at 8–10 weeks after the switch to 12/12. The clone-only and Humboldt versions finish outdoors by late October. THC runs anywhere from 15% to 27%, and Leafly notes it can clear 20%.
Effects lean clear-headed and upbeat, with a mild cerebral lift that stops short of heavy sedation. The flavor follows the Blueberry side, sweet berry over earth.
From collective shelves to a mixtape title
Blue Dream was among the first strains extracted by AbsoluteXtracts, the California concentrate brand. Juicy J named his 2011 mixtape Blue Dream & Lean, and Weezer and Prometheus Brown both released songs called Blue Dream in 2021.
It ranked among Leafly's top 10 most-viewed strains in 2021, and its Leafly page now holds nearly 15,000 reviews. Leafly users give it 4.3 stars.
