Zoap is a hybrid bred and selected by DEO Farms, the Deep East Oakland operation, and grown indoors by Wizard Trees in Los Angeles. The keeper is phenotype #21 from the Rainbow Sherbet #16 F2 line.
In June 2022, Zoap took first place overall at the Zalympix Championships in Los Angeles. It also placed second for terps and second for taste at the same event.
From OZ Kush seeds to the Rainbow Sherbet line
The family starts with OZ Kush seeds that DEO picked up at the Emerald Cup in the mid-2010s. DEO grew them out and selected Pink Guava, an F2 of OZ Kush. LA Weekly dates the start of the breeding work behind Zoap to 2015.
A Pink Guava male then went into an open pollination with six other strains. One of them was a Black Sherb phenotype of Sunset Sherbet. That run produced the Rainbow Sherbet family, and DEO shared seeds from it with Wizard Trees.
Leafly lists Zoap as an evenly balanced hybrid from Rainbow Sherbet and Pink Guava, testing around 21% THC. Wizard Trees lists the cross as Rainbow Sherbet #16 × Rainbow Sherbet on its flower, and Zoap is the #21 plant from that F2 generation.
Wizard Trees brings it to the shelf
Wizard Trees, the Los Angeles brand run by Scott, grows Zoap as indoor flower. Its eighth on Weedmaps tested at 24.85% THC and sold for $60–$62 depending on the dispensary. The brand pitches itself on small batches and designer cannabis built on careful genetics sourcing.
The product copy describes buds with deep purple hues, long curly orange hairs and a thick white coat of trichomes. The flavor runs from sweet candy to funky guava with a light touch of sherbet. That floral, soapy edge is where the name comes from.
Leafly users most often report feeling giggly, relaxed and hungry. Weedmaps describes a cheerful, euphoric lift that stays clear of heavy sedation, though some batches land harder.
The 2022 Zalympix win
The third Zalympix drew roughly 20 times the crowd of the first edition, which hosted about 300 people. Zoap had placed second at the Zalympix before, then won the whole thing in 2022. Blue Zushi from Zushi and TENco took second overall and won both flavor categories.
Scott told LA Weekly he did not expect a first overall after two second-place finishes. DEO said Zalympix is the only competition he enters, calling it one of the more for-the-people events. He had also just recovered from three weeks of pneumonia before the contest.
That same year, High Times named Zoap one of its five strains of 2022. The magazine called it the flagship of DEO's impact on exotic cannabis over the prior two years.
Zoap as a parent
After the win, DEO told LA Weekly he planned to release about 10 new strains per harvest, many of them Zoap hybrids. Wizard Trees has built its own crosses on the cut.
Wizard Trees crosses Zoap with Zangria to make Zoza, a dense, deep purple strain the brand describes as creamy and candy-forward. It pairs Zoap with Y-Life for Dark Matter, which it sells as flower, single pre-rolls and multipacks.
Zoap has also reached the seed market. Weedmaps notes feminized Zoap seeds from Barney's Farm with a 63–70 day flowering time. Indoor plants reach about 100–120 cm, with yields up to 600 g/m². The listing describes the plant as vigorous with strong branching, and finished buds show dark purple patches and orange pistils.
