Animal Face is Seed Junky Genetics' cross of Face Off OG and Animal Mints, and the phenotype that made it famous was hunted from seed by Fig Farms in Oakland. It is old-school gas, pine, lemon, skunk and fuel, wrapped in the dense, greasy structure of modern dessert genetics. Where It Comes From
Two different acts of work sit behind this name, and the distinction is the whole story. Seed Junky Genetics bred the cross, creating the population. Fig Farms hunted that population and picked one plant out of it.
Fig Farms made the selection during the Prop 215 era and chose that plant specifically because it read like Face Off OG. That was a deliberate hunt for the OG side of the cross rather than the cookie side, and it is why Animal Face turned out savory where most of its peers turned out sweet.
The hunt started in 2017, and the cut has been in Oakland since the first full production run in a room. Fig Farms has grown it continuously ever since, which is a rare thing in a market where cuts get passed around and degraded.
At the 2022 Emerald Cup Awards, Fig Farms placed 1st in Indoor Flower with Animal Face, took 3rd with Blue Face, 5th with Holy Moly, which also won the Indoor Breeders Cup, and 11th with Sixth Sense. Four of five entries landed in the top 20. The win pushed Animal Face from a respected Bay Area cut into a national reference point for gas-forward indoor flower.
The Cross
The genetics are Face Off OG x Animal Mints. Seed Junky Genetics, the label run by JBeezy, is the breeder of record. Fig Farms is the cultivator and the selector of the celebrated phenotype, and it is Fig Farms' name that appears on the award.
Face Off OG carries the pine, lemon, earth and penetrating fuel of the OG line. Animal Mints brings mint, sweet dough, spice and the tight, resin-heavy bud structure buyers expect from contemporary flower. The selection leaned hard toward the OG parent.
Fig Farms describes it bluntly as a heavy-duty, old-school, skunky gassy OG with megaphone terps, and lists notes of kiwi, black licorice, paint thinner and yellow Froot Loops. That last cluster is more useful than it sounds, because the solvent-and-artificial-fruit combination is exactly what separates this from a straight kush profile.
The flower is neon green and kush-shaped, fading to pink and purple tips in the final weeks. It is greasy to the touch and leaves visible oil rings on a joint, which is a fair rough proxy for how much resin the plant is putting out. Onset is fast and high-intensity before the back half turns relaxed, so treat it as an evening cultivar and go easy on a first run.
What It Left Behind
The placement is 1st place, Indoor Flower, 2022 Emerald Cup Awards, entered by Fig Farms. Animal Face is now a benchmark cut, the plant people name when they argue that a phenotype hunt is as valuable as the breeding that preceded it.
