Gelato #41, also sold as Bacio Gelato, is a numbered keeper from the Sherbinskis Gelato hunt. It crosses Sunset Sherbet with Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies, and Leafly credits the strain to the Cookies Family in California.
Sherbinskis, the brand Mario Guzman built on Gelato, still lists Bacio Gelato #41 in its genetics lineup. The plant has gone on to parent Jealousy, Leafly's 2022 Strain of the Year.
Mario Guzman and the numbered Gelato hunt
Guzman, known as Mr. Sherbinski, launched Gelato around 2014, according to a 2022 LA Weekly profile. He has won strain of the year twice and has worked with Cookies founder Jigga. He splits his time between Los Angeles and a farm in Mendocino County.
The original Gelato cross threw several standout phenotypes, and growers came to know them by number. Leafly records #3, #33, #41 and #45 among them. Sherbinskis gave #41 the name Bacio and sells it next to Mochi, Acai Berry and Gello in its Gelato family.
Guzman told LA Weekly he hunts for the tastemakers rather than the masses, and that he doesn't believe in making new things all the time.
His hunts still run at scale. The room he described to LA Weekly holds 160 plants per hunt, and that cycle used 120 of them across six strains, starting from 20–30 seeds of each. He now hunts with partners Higher Function and Culture Cannabis.
Growing Bacio: color, structure and timing
Leafly lists Gelato #41 as a hybrid that flowers in 8–9 weeks. Plants stay short to medium in height, especially in soil, and deliver a medium yield. Leafly rates it hard to grow.
The buds come in an array of colors, from light green to purple, under a heavy coat of trichomes.
Leafly describes the high as a heavy body feel that leaves the mind clear. On the palate, Sherbinskis tags Bacio with gas and floral notes.
Bacio as a parent
Guzman kept working Bacio into new crosses. At a 2022 preview party covered by LA Weekly, Bacio and Acai stood in as the renditions of his most famed Gelato cuts. He also showed Sherbet × Bacio, one of his favorites from the pack. He also paired #41 with King Louis OG for a strain called 41 Kings and tested an experimental Candyland × Bacio Gelato cross.
Other breeders took #41 further. Seed Junky Genetics crossed Sherbet Bx1 with Gelato 41 to make Jealousy, which Leafly named its Strain of the Year in 2022. Gelonade crosses Lemon Tree with Gelato #41.
Sherbinskis today
Sherbinskis calls itself the home of the original Gelato. The California brand sells indoor flower in its signature orange glass jars, along with live rosin joints, live resin cartridges and the Quattro dual-chamber live resin vape. It also runs an apparel line.
The rest of the numbered family is easy to trace from here. Gelato #33 is another numbered keeper from the same Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint cross. The wider Gelato line has also parented strains such as Biscotti and Runtz.
