Purple Octane is an indica from Seed Junky Genetics, the Northridge breeder run by J Beezy and Wes. Its cross is (Biscotti × Sherb BX1) × Jealousy F2, which puts it one generation away from the Jealousy line that Leafly named its 2022 Strain of the Year.
The name fits the plant. It tends to turn deep purple late in flower, finishing as dense, resin-covered buds.
Biscotti and Sherb BX1 on one side
The first parent is itself a cross of Biscotti and Sherb BX1. Biscotti was originally bred by Cookies Farms from Gelato 25 and Sour Florida OG, so it carries Gelato and Florida OG ancestry into the mix.
Sherb BX1 is a backcross. Seed Junky's J Beezy has explained that it came from Sunset Sherbet bred with itself and Animal Cookies, and that the cut traces to Jai, the Cookies breeder known as Jigga. The same Sherb BX1 is a parent of Jealousy, so Purple Octane carries that line on both sides of its family tree.
Jealousy F2 and a sister called Permanent Marker
Jealousy is Sherb BX1 crossed with Gelato #41, the Gel Bern cut. It reached adult-use stores in late 2019 through The Minntz, a Cookies and Seed Junky collaboration. By 2022 it was sold in more than 1,500 stores, took 2nd place for ice water hash at the Emerald Cup and 2nd at the High Times Cannabis Cup SoCal. Clones sold for as much as $500 a cutting.
Purple Octane uses a second-generation Jealousy, or F2, as its other parent. Leafly lists it among the notable Jealousy crosses next to Permanent Marker, which uses the same Biscotti × Sherb BX1 parent but pairs it with Jealousy F3 instead.
That makes the two strains close siblings. They share one full parent and differ only by a single generation on the Jealousy side.
How the plant grows and finishes
Seedfinder classifies Purple Octane as a mostly indica hybrid that can be grown indoors or outdoors. Plants can stretch considerably after the flip to bloom, and they start putting out terpenes as early as two weeks into flower.
The finished flowers are elongated and fat, fully covered in bright white resin. Late in bloom the plant has a strong tendency to purple, leaving buds with a mix of green, purple and orange. Seedfinder puts typical THC around 25%.
On Leafly, reviewers describe chunky, dense nugs with a deep purple look. The top reported effects are sleepy, relaxed and tingly, and the leading flavors are grape, diesel and a chemical edge.
Seed Junky's own Purple Octane releases
Seed Junky started in 2007 in a basement and now operates out of Northridge in the San Fernando Valley. Purple Octane is part of the brand's own retail lineup as well as its breeding catalog.
On Weedmaps, Seed Junky lists a Purple Octane 1g pre-roll, classed as an indica and rated as high potency. The listing tested at about 212mg of THC per gram, or roughly 21%, with almost no CBD.
The brand describes the effect as a slow-building euphoria that settles into deep relaxation. Its product copy calls out dense purple buds, which lines up with what growers see in the garden.
