Compound Z is a hybrid from Compound Genetics that crosses White Runtz with Apples & Bananas. It sits in the Apples & Bananas series, the family behind Chris Lynch's breakout collaboration with Cookies.
The cross traces back through four big modern lines: Platinum Cookies, Granddaddy Purple, Blue Power and Gelatti. Finished buds come out dense and purple under a heavy trichome coat.
From Tiger Trees to Compound Genetics
Lynch, born in San Jose and raised in Portland, started growing after a 2006 trip to Amsterdam. Weedmaps News traces his first seed brand, Tiger Trees, to Portland from 2017 to 2019, built with a friend around Chemdog D and Sour Diesel crosses.
He rebranded as Compound Genetics in 2019 for wider market appeal and moved to San Francisco. The company ran with fewer than five employees and worked with Node Labs.
Jet Fuel Gelato was an early hit, a gassy Gelato cross, and Lynch has said he was first to market with hot Gelato seeds. The Menthol came out of those Jet Fuel Gelato crosses.
Another early line, Legend Orange Apricot, spawned Flavor Crystals, Ice Cream Man and Purple Apricot. Pavé, a collaboration with Quavo, and Big Face followed in 2021.
Cookies and the Apples & Bananas collection
Lynch met Berner at MJBizCon 2019, and Apples & Bananas became the first Compound collaboration with Cookies. In his words, he created the strains, and Berner handled marketing and branding.
For the December 2021 Emerald Cup, the two planned a full Apples & Bananas seed collection, with crosses to Pavé, Big Face and White Runtz.
Leafly lists Apples & Bananas as an indica-dominant cross of Now N Later and Jet Fuel Gelato, with apple, pear and tree-fruit flavor. Gastro Pop, which pairs it with Grape Gas, came from the same program and has since parented Facetz and Violet Sky.
The series keeps growing. Seeds Here Now carries Goofiez (Jokerz × Apples & Bananas), Exotic² (Red Pop × Apples & Bananas), Tiger Moon (Pluto S1 × Apples & Bananas) and Gold Dropz (Spritzer × Apples & Bananas).
What White Runtz adds
White Runtz fills the other half. Leafly describes it as a Gelato × Zkittlez hybrid, the same pairing behind Runtz, known for trichomes so thick the buds look white like snow.
Seedfinder traces Compound Z's wider ancestry through Runtz, Gelato, Girl Scout Cookies and OG Kush. Its breeder notes point to β-caryophyllene and D-limonene as the dominant terpenes, and Leafly also names limonene first.
Seeds, flowering time and yield
Seeds Here Now sells Compound Z as a regular 13-pack for $400, classing it as a 50/50 hybrid with flowering at 60–65 days. Seedfinder lists a feminized release suited to both indoor and outdoor gardens.
Yields run moderate to heavy, up to 450 g/m² indoors. The retailer calls it a challenging grow that needs dialed feeding, strong light and a controlled environment, and lists THC at 24–28%.
Purple flower in the Northeast
Compound Z has turned up well outside California. Solar Cannabis Co. offers it in Somerset, Seekonk and Dartmouth, Massachusetts, and in Warwick, Rhode Island, as part of the Apples and Bananas series.
Solar describes dense, rigid buds with purple coloring, orange pistils and a heavy coat of trichomes. Leafly lists a 24% THC reading and frosty buds with dark green, purple and orange tones. Users rate it 4.7 out of 5 and report feeling relaxed, uplifted and euphoric.
